front hub asembly help
1972 ford f100 4x4 with manual hubs
i replaced the fornt drums today and now i cant seem to get everything assembled back togther properly .
does any one have a fairly detailed illustration of the wheel bearing and manual hub installation . i think im just putting back togther in the wrong order. but ive treid several ways and im still not getting enough room to replace the last outer snap ring.
also on the other side i cant seem to get the drum/hub assembly to go on at all. what am i missing thats making this so difficult.
please help
ps- im glad to see a site dedicated to the early model ford trucks . makes it sooo much easier to find the info i need versus , "the other" ford site.

re: front hub asembly help
I have 2 F1004x4's. On my 68, the outer retainers [the last part to go in before the outer ring] go in easily. On the 72, on one of them won't guite go in far enough to get the outer snap ring in without a little tap on it. I don't know why, maybe its a little tweaked. Go to the link Heep posted. It shows you the right way. Make sure that the two nuts the hold the bearing on are installed in the right order and the pin fits in the hole of the inner retainer.[ you probaly knew that] Good luck

As far as putting on the snap ring, you may need to pull the outer axle shaft out to get to it. They tend to slip in just enought to make it hard to get that dang ring on.

thanks for all the info and so quickly too. i did find thta schmetic , in fact thats how i found this site , at first it still confused me until i stared at it for a long time . but im still having problems geting the outer snap ring to seat.
heres how i have it set , let me know if ive put something in the worng place.
the bearing ccup looking piece is cupped inward facing the baering , leaving the flat sie to the outsdie. then i have the spring , then the keyyed pieces ( part # 1a052) then the small snap ring , which was /is a pain to get in place with that spring tension.) then i place the tabbed piece over it all and and then the part that has the threaded holes for the hub twister goes over that and then the large snap ring , which i cant get to seat.
ive really tightened up the bearing nuts , alot , in fact if ive done something wrong its probably screwed up my bearings already ,
, but the one thing i find that might cause the problem , is where the drum itself seperates from the hub casing it wont or hasnt yet seated completely , i can see a gap of about maybe 1/8 inch or so . which if my thinknig is correct would help seat the outer snap ring . ive used a air tool to tighten down the lug nuts to help seat it , but its still not going . im afraid to really hit it hard with the air tool afraid il never get the lug nuts back off, and i didnt want to ruin the lug nuts , is there a trick to getting it to seat correctly . the only thing i havent tried yet is heat. i jsut bought a torch set and tanks , but i havent set it up yet bc its been a really long time since ive messed with oxy/actylene , and i dont wantto blow up my shop. so im wait until a buddy of mine who using it alot to come over and at least set up the regulators correctly.
the other problem im having is , the other side i cant even get the drum to go over the shoes , and released it all the way. heres what i tihnk may be the problem though, i got one of the drums from schucks the other from , bot hlook the same , but one has max dia in inches the other in mm's , ive convienced myself that schucks gave me the wrong one and thats why it wont fit . so next day off i have im going down to napa to get another drum hopefully it will be correct. and try it out . the napa one is the one im having problems with the hub seating correctly though.
sorry i rambled , but ive spent all day trying to finsh this up , all this came up bc i wanted to bleed the brakes , sheesh.

Did you replace the brake shoes on the side that won't go on? I've seen shoes that were so out of round [bad cores that got relined] that the drums wouldn't fit. There shouldn't be any gaps between the hub and drum.

re: front hub asembly help
The wheel studs are pressed through the hub and drum. Then it has to
be turned to make it true. Putting the hubs back together is always a
pain in the axx. Best to have a picture of the assembly if you can.
Welcome and good luck KP![Cool 8)](./images/smilies/icon_cool.gif)

re: front hub asembly help
well , just figured i put up an update.
all done !!!!!!!!!!!!
my problem was i had put the outer bearing on the inside , and guess what its actually a smaller bearing. im not sure how i messed it up and in fact i thought i had swapped the bearings jsut to make sure . but after taking a day off and clearing my head , i took the time to actually check them and low and behold , but anyways its all done , other then adjsuting the brakes. but im satisfied so far.
