Dash replacement

Post by mmccarron »

Can anyone clue me in on how to remove all the junk under a dash and mount it on a new cab? Is there any instructions in this forum. Please I need help since I have never done anything like this so I need really detailed instructions.

Uhhhh... that's a bit cryptic, Mike. What exactly do you want to do?

oh man that is a job in itself. you will have to remove the gauges the ashtray the radio the glove box the air conditioner and the wiper switch the ignition switch the choke cable the flasher switch. then you are ready to start on the wiring try to keep the switches plug into the wiring as you remove them. disconnect everything on the main looms going out of the cab or under the floormat. then you'll have to remove the cab wiring itself. just make sure to mark everything so you know what hooks to what when you put it back in. maybe some color coded tape on each disconnection you make.

Well ,Jor
I want to remove everything from one cab and mount it on another one.
I am going to rewire the entire truck so the wiring isn,t important (I think).

oh i see i would start with the stuff just under the dash as you lay on the floor and look up. and work in from there. but if you took out the intrument cluster first that could give you more light to see what you want to see. its not all that hard to do to take that stuff out. what i found out after stripping the cab out of my 78. what i releized after i had everything out was what a mess the wiring looked. i'm glad i didn't have to put it back in anything. but as all things that look messy you just start simple and work slowly at it.

I tell ya, I was stripping parts off of an ole red '71 F100 at a salvage yard the other day and had the darndest time trying to remove the windshield washer knob from the dash. I never got it out! :x Must be some kind of chinese (no offense intended) jigsaw puzzle. Got alot of other good stuff though. :D

We were discussing this awhile back but I can't find the thread. Anyhow, like Fordman said, take out the instrument panel, then the glovey. The instrument panel has eight screws (and the speedo cable). Once those are gone you can see what you're doing. Let's see... starting from the drivers side:
1. - DISCONNECT THE NEG BATTERY CABLE (do this before you do the istrument panel);
2. Brake Warning Light: It's got a spring and a notched housing. Reach behind there, push and give it a turn;
3. Ignition: The bezel has three notches. Get something to turn it out with. There's also a little metal housing that attaches with a metal screw on the dash underside. Unscrew it and the switch will come right out;
3. Light Switch: Push the button on top of the switch housing and pull the lever out. Then remove the nut with a large screw driver.
4. Wipers: The knob has a little allen screw. Take that out and you'll see the nut has a couple of notches. Get something to turn it out with;

It's easier to explain this with photos. I just took it all out of my 68 and put it all back in so I have some photos. If you have any trouble email me and I'll send you pictures (oiga at comcast dot net). Also, if you can find the thread, Keith posted some great info on this. Let us know how it goes and take some photos if you get a chance.

How about the gear on the cab that holds the wiper arm? How does that thing come off?

Remove the wiper arms from the outside, then just unbolt the wiper motor and wiper transmission arms as an assembly.

If you are going to be buying a new harness don't worry about how things come out, just get the new harness first. When you are putting it in the new cab just harvest the parts from the old cab as you need them. This way you dont have all the switches and parts cluttering your work area.

Great advice from Indy. This will save you a lot of head scratching.
