Efi conversion.

Post by Rustybones »

I am thinking doing an EFI conversion on my camper special with a stock 390. I am looking at the fitech go street unit. Has anyone used one, or any other similar product? I am also wondering if it is as plug and play as advertised or if they need to monkey around with fuel lines?

Hey,

I just put a Fitech Go Street 400 on a '67 with a 352. Pretty easy to install but i had to manually input idle and cold start settings to get it to start easy and idle smooth. It took some time since I had to wait for the engine to cool down to find out if I went the right direction for cold.startup.

Once I got everything set, the truck starts easily and runs great at all rpms. I have a Street Demon carb on my '72 with a 302 and have to honestly say it almost does as well as the Fitech fuel injection, though. Just depends on what you want to spend.

Just my 2 cents. :2cents:

Oh, and by the way, if you use the Fuel Command Center from Fitech, your stock manual fuel pump supplies fuel to it. Then you just run a line from the FCC to the injection unit and another line back to the tank for a return. Not complicated at all.

I just installed the Holley Sniper on my '70 F-250 with a 390 - stock except for an "S" 4 barrel manifold. It has been running great. I installed a Holley pump in the auxiliary tank rather than using a command center. In all an in-tank pump seemed like a simpler approach. Both the Holley and FITech seem to have their proponents and detractors but I think a lot boils down to reading and following the installation instructions with no shortcuts. I have the 390 mated to a 4R70W and am using the TPS signal from the Sniper for the controller. Right now I am running a Pertronix distributor and will upgrade to a new distributor that is compatible with timing control after I break in the stroker motor I am building. Holley recommends using a standard ignition when installing the system to eliminate one variable. After sorting out the system, timing control can be added to get the most out of the fuel injection computer.

I live in the Denver area which was a good part of the motivation to go with fuel injection. Our higher altitude makes modern fuels very susceptible to boil-over and the altitude changes when going up into the mountains makes carbs a bit of a pain.

I’ve done a Terminator, but a lot of what I did will translate to a Sniper. See if my Project thread gives you any ideas.

Holley even makes a 2 bbl Sniper if you still have a stock 2bbl intake.

Has the EFI significantly helped MPG? I put a Howell system on a 84, 258ci Jeep straight 6 and it worked wonders on the way that thing ran and MPG. For that era vehicle the system drastically simplified and got rid most of the smog BS that crowded the engine compartment. Pretty involved installation though. New computer, wiring harness, electric fuel pump and other things. They must be simpler on the older pre smog engines when you are not removing and blocking off so much stuff?

There is a huge benefit to having an OEM based system versus anything aftermarket. What system is still going to be around in 20 years? Where are you going to get parts on the weekend 150 miles from home if something crashes? Pertronix is a great example.

Personally for a stockish FE engine with a conventional air cleaner I'd convert a speed density TBI system off a Chevy to work. They are remarkable simple and just plain work. We did one on my dad's boat with a 350 to replace the Holley 4bbl and it used a regular distributor, max of 15 psi of fuel pressure and was stand alone. It also has some decent modifications and upgrades out there. He ran an aftermarket processor and eventually went with a custom chipped OEM box. The engine ran better and was easier starting hot or cold.

If I didn't care what it looked like under the hood I'd do a late model mass air controlled EFI setup with a modified intake. Probably throw a pair of smaller turbos on and run that too.

The Howell system for my jeep was a 80s vintage Chevy throttle body with a adapter plate made to fit AMC engine. Very reliable, never had a issue with it. Never had to find parts for it.

While I’m not sure about the Sniper, much of the Terminator is off the shelf sensors at least... I don’t think mine did much for the mileage, but my truck is a poor choice to evaluate that on.
