Starter wont engage

Post by ebaby35 »

Bought a new starter flip switch and hear it but not engaging ring gear. Could it be the solenoid is bad or car battery doesnt have enough juice?

Does solenoid click or rattle or nothing? Does the starter run? If not load check the battery and all connections - positive and negative.

Bought a new solenoid and kinda clicks now so thought it might be the battery. I try to jump it but just sparks at solenoid.

Could be the wrong starter. There is some confusion. About the ford manual vs automatic starters.

Check your other wires on the battery side of your solenoid. Especially the brown one from the alternator. I struggled with mine not starting one time and discovered that wire had a bad crimp at the ring terminal. Didn't notice it until the 3rd time I pulled the solenoid and the ring pulled off the end. Crimped a new terminal on it and she fired right up.

Also make sure you have a good ground where the solenoid bolts to the inner fender. Those sheet metal screws don't always hold their grip. I drilled through and put bolts, star washers and lock nuts on my to make sure I had a good ground.
