"Bump" seam rust solutions?

Post by luke-ao »

The entire seam is not this bad but there are a few areas on both sides of the bed that look like this.

I started out with the intention of just welding the entire seam, which isn't an issue but I'm concerned about any rust that may be left over under the weld down deep where I'm not getting penetration with the weld.

I suppose I could spray Eastwoods Rust Converter or Rust Encapsulatior then just reseal with seam sealer.

Or perhaps buy a rust remover solution then weld up.

Just looking for ideas, how have you guys dealt with the issue?

Man you should be able to find a good bed in Arizona !

I'm trying to find a bed in St Louis not having any luck.

Also by the time you get rid of that scaly rust I think you'll have some holes or very thin metal.

Surface rust is easily removable with a blaster.

You're' dealing with flakey rust that requires removal and new metal.

Actually the bed is in great shape, this is the worst of it, like I said it's not the entire seam>>

There's still good metal under the rust, it does not go all the way through. I'm just not sure I could simply grind it out thoroughly the way the seam is made.

I decided to try Eastwoods rust remover and their weld through primer. Materials are ordered, I'll give an update on how it works out...

Suggest you search Body Seams or Bed Seams on the forum...there has been much discussion on this in the past.

On my '71 I did what is described in the folowing link and I'm satisfied with the outcome. Take a look: http://fordification.com/forum/viewtopi ... ms#p702489

I have a similar, although perhaps not as bad, situation on my 69 F100 LWB. I have read where someone used a hack saw blade as the cleanup tool.
I am kind of thinking of trying that approach, tape it up around the seam, prime it and paint it.

I just a die grinder with a thin cut off wheel to remove the old sealer, paint and thinner rust sections.
