Have you used a fuel filler door kit?

I found these on line and while it looks like the answer to my problem I'm not thrilled with the use of cabinet hardware in the execution.
Maybe a bit of history would help. I'm rebuilding my F100 flareside, installing the in frame aux tank, removing the tank in cab, 390, 5 speed and a bunch of other things. My build thread is here. http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... 22&t=79468 I was planning to hang the spare over the fender but I've decided I like it better upright in the bed behind the driver. Since I have the spare there and the gas fill is almost directly under this area I thought I'd put the gas fill behind a door in the bed instead of a pipe sticking out between the fender and the cab. I'm planning on making a sheetmetal cover for it that will tuck under the spare.
If you've used one of these or something like it, or done something that's not too hard to fab, or even seen something that would work I'd be interested in hearing from you. I'm not great at fabrication but I can do simple things, my welding skills are spotty at best and I don't have a ton of money but I can assemble things and I'm mechanically inclined. So I guess what I'm trying to say is if you have an idea that can be executed by an idiot I'd appreciate it.

Haven't got to that stage yet but I recently acquired a pair of Dentside fuel doors and sheetmetal to replace the aftermarket aluminum doors from back in the day. However, I always keep my eye out for cool mods and came upon a shortbed Bump at a show which had a neat idea for an aft mounted tank....
Voila....
For giggles, here's the truck....
In terms of stowing the spare, here's a clean way to hide it in plain sight... don't forget to add drain holes.

I think it was '75 when Ford started offering flip out doors instead of surface mounted filler necks.
A good way to ID the year is to login to Fordification's sister side for Dentsides... Fordification.ne... to review the factory literature and the pictures contained therein.

That spare tire storage idea is cool. Had not seen anything like that done before.

I'm using the factory auxillary tank. I plan on bringing it up through the bed since I'm going to mount the spare in the bed dehind the driver. I'm looking for the easiest way to cut in a gas door and found these kits but I'm not thrilled with the cabinet hinge that's used.luke-ao wrote:What gas tank are you using?

I was referring to the red truck with the filler neck in the side of the bed, just want to know if it's a side access tank. (?)

Not my truck.... a mid-80s Suburban or a 72-80 International Scout II would fit between the rails and have a filler port appropriate for that set-up.luke-ao wrote:What gas tank are you using?

Ah damn, already have my new Mustang tank, I just really hate the idea of the filler door in the bed.
