Hello all,
I'm new here so please bear with me. I'm going to look at a 1970 swb custom that a co-worker has this week end. he has had it for a number of years with the last 3-4 setting but started regularly. My question is this what are the most rust prone areas of these trucks. what should I look for in the areas of body and frame that would be a reason to steer clear. Thanks for your time
reasons not to buy a 70 swb custom?

grues, Here are some areas to look at:
1.) Lay down and look under the truck at the floor pans
2.) Open the door(s) and look at the bottm of them, and edges
3.) Look at the Cab mounts (important)
4.) Open the tailgate and check the gate bushings.
5.) Open the hood and check the inner/outter corners of the hood.
6.)Check the area above the drip rail.
7.) Check cab corners.
8.) Check bed floor. (under and on top)
9.) Check along the bottom molding of the whoel truck
10.) 67-72's like to rust aroung the welds on the body. Check there.
11.) If the truck has moldings, it's probably rusted under there too from trash build up.
Theres many more places to check, but those are the most significant.
Oh yeah, these are not "reasons to steer clear", just rust prone areas. Most ALL trucks of this age have rust somewhere on them.

Note: If the engine has not been run for long periods during the lay up, the valve train will tend to varnish from fuel. Then when run, you may up with damage and a having to do the top end. On the other hand, no problems will occur. Depends on many factors. If truck is in good condition and something that meets your needs or wants, I would buy if the price is reasonable.

Also check the front inner fender wells next to the hinges and underneath the battery trays.
If they are rusted, they are easy to replace.
