New windshield
just installed new windshield . I had someone that was suppose to help me install it but after waiting on him the past couple of weeks i became impatient and thought i would give it a try. Turn out pretty darn good considering it is the first time i ever installed one.

Re: New windshield
How difficult was it to do yourself. I don't need a new windshield just new seals for front and rear.

Re: New windshield
I have done a windshield before and while it is probably easier to do alone than a rear window due to the windshield leaning back on the cab, I still couldn't imagine doing it alone without an outside person to make sure it doesn't move and to apply pressure as the rope is pulled from the inside. How did you manage that and get it right? Just curious how long it took you and how many tries?
I am waiting on a buddy to get my windshield in as well, but mine is going to be a lot tougher as I am going to try and install it with the trim. And that is a nightmare from everything I have heard.

Re: New windshield
I got it the first try. I would pull rope rope in about 6 in. increments and at each pull i would get out of cab and tap on window with palm of hand. Took about 1:45 to install but that includes stopping and getting out of heat to smoke cigarettes. I'm just happy i did not crack window!!!!Calfdemon wrote:I have done a windshield before and while it is probably easier to do alone than a rear window due to the windshield leaning back on the cab, I still couldn't imagine doing it alone without an outside person to make sure it doesn't move and to apply pressure as the rope is pulled from the inside. Re: New windshield
Did my homework on it. I just knew i had to take my time. The top corners was the worst part of it. On a difficult scale from 1 to 10, i would give it a 5. Patience, patience, patience!!hillcountryflt wrote:How difficult was it to do yourself. I don't need a new windshield just new seals for front and rear.

Re: New windshield
Been telling myself this f100 pickup rebuild is there to help me build patience.
I am want to remove mine to clean up some rust, see how far the rust goes and put on a new seal as mine leaks (luckily here in my part of Texas I have not seen much rain (well lucky from owning a leaking f100 perspective).
I went ahead and ordered me a seal from steele rubber. Don't know when I will install, but at least I will have it. At least I know it is possible to put one in by yourself. How hard was the removal of the windshield.

About 5 minutes to take one out.

Re: New windshield
Hi, Looks good. Quick question. Do you have to use any type of sealer or compound or is it just glass and rubber?

Re: New windshield
I thought i would have to use a sealer but the installation instructions said it did not need it but if it was being installed in 1978 and later it would need sealer. I have read some people still use it no matter the model.ponyexpress wrote:Hi, Looks good. Quick question. Do you have to use any type of sealer or compound or is it just glass and rubber?

Re: New windshield
You can use sealer if you want to, but our trucks came with the windows installed rubber to metal and are designed to work without sealer. To each their own.

Re: New windshield
I had my windshield replaced at a local shop last month for about 200$. Two places actually turned down the job because of the vehicles age.
The shop took 3hrs to do the job, broke the first windshield and bent up my chrome trim pretty good. But they used a rubber gasket like the one on the back window in conjunction with a black sealer of some kind.
Apparently it is a difficult installation and after seeing the shop guys sweating and swearing at it, I'm glad to have paid the 200$ for someone else to of done it.

I installed the back window today. Must say that it was much easier than the front.

Re: New windshield
I just pulled my windshield yesterday. Not a bad job. Cleaned up the old gasket. Installed the new Steele Rubber gasket on my windshield (that was a tedious project in itself) but so far don't have the inspiration to try installing it myself. Seems like a lot of potential for things going wrong. There is a local installer who will come by and do it at my house for $75. Think I might let him have the job.

Re: New windshield
hmm, 75 seems kinda high, but much cheaper than new glass. It took me about 2 hours including reading stuff online, watching a video (some bronco guys doing it) on youtube and prepping everything. 2 or 3 false starts when i got halfway and realized the window wasn't lined up with the hole.
I cracked the window installing it.. probably could have done it with a second person but its really hard to see the curvature once the rubber is on. Window also was pre-cracked which didn't help, but yeah, make sure the curve is lined up perfecto or it won't go on. the rubber puts a lot of force on the glass if the curve doesn't line up.
if i had to do it again i'd probably measure the opening and put a line of tape down the center of the glass (measured) and down the center of the hole (measured) then line those up... maybe do the same thing up/down because thats a bit tricky too.

I just got my windshield installed yesterday by a shop. It leaked like a sieve last night during the rain. Back I go today...
