Howdy from St. Louis
Howdy from St. Louis.
I recently acquired a 1971 F100 long wheel base Super Custom, with a 302 and 3-speed automatic.
The truck appears to be in decent condition. Rust isn't too bad. There is some rust by the hood hinges and the bed has a few holes.
The previous owner believes it has a 5.0 from an 80s Mustang in it. I'm not sure yet though. I'm going to run the casting numbers to try to find out for sure. Based on the VIN, it did come with a 302 though.
The bad: Here in Missouri, we have to get safety inspections when titling vehicles (if you're moving in from out of state and the title is in your name you only have to get a ID/OD (VIN/Odometer) verification done.
So, I know the truck is going to fail the inspection for the following items:
- Crack in the windshield. I imagine the only place to pick it up will be online? I can't imagine the local auto glass stores having F100 windshields in stock. Also, who'd install it? Any windshield installer?
- Steering is very jumpy. It's possible the fluid in the steering box is low or something (I don't know anything about them yet), or I might need a new steering box.
- Rear brake line is apparently ruptured along the frame somewhere, so the front brakes are the only ones working right now.
- Some indicators and a brake light are out, as well as one of the license plate light housing is missing.
- The horn is inop (not operational). There's an aftermarket "Grant" wheel on it.
- The engine. The inspection station said if it is from an 80's Mustang, I'll need all of the emissions control systems (cats, filters, whatever...) from the 80's Mustang.
Since the truck is pretty dang old, I'm sure it may fail a few of the other 30-40 inspection items.
So, things aren't looking to good which is a bummer. It's crazy to me that Missouri requires an inspection on a vehicle like this, but I guess it's for safety reasons (or revenue).
Here are pics from when I bought it.

to the family from south Texas... we like to see pictures so post some soon... I would not tell the inspection place that the engine is from a newer vehicle, that way you are under grandfather law, which means that the vehicle should pass with the equipment it came from the factory with... also check your tie end rods that may be the steering problem... good luck...

from Georgia! Check with your local windshield places first. Around here they make it out to be easily available and readily installed. Don't call the Safelite guys or the other big commercial outfits. Check with the mom n pop locals.

Lol. Double posted so I'll just add that a guy around here will come to my house and provide/install for under $300.

Re: Howdy from St. Louis
They will tell you that it has to have the emissions from the newer engine, but in Missouri, only cars from '96 and newer get emissions tested. My '91 Tbird has no smog pump or EGR and has passed that way for 6 years. Just get it safe and you will be OK.

Re: Howdy from St. Louis
Thanks again for all of the information.
I'm getting the windshield installed right now. The tech is having problems though. Apparently he can't get it to set right.
I originally went to SpeedEmissions for the ID/OD, but I'm going to find a mom and pop shop in the St. Charles area to do the inspection.
I tried to find the casting numbers on the engine, but I couldn't find anything. I believe they're under or around the starter, but my starter has headers going around it so I couldn't pull it off.
