Falling pine cone!

Post by 390bump »

Hood got dented from a falling pine cone AKA a "green grenade". What is best way to fix? Repaint the entire hood?

If it's not too severe those "paintless dent removal" places do good work. Had a friend whose camaro got hit by hail and they got it all out. Couldn't even tell anything had happened.

Hi Randy,

My son has used them several times for his little accidents... But you can see where the work was done as there are little waves left over. This happened while parked at work and looks like the property manager is willing to put in an insurance claim. Might as well get it done right if insurance is paying... Not sure if they can spot paint where they fix the dent then re-clear the whole hood? this was a base coat / clear coat paint job... The dent is directly in my line of sight when driving so I'm staring at the dent instead of the road! Come to find out squirrels like to cut those green cones of the tree then eat them later when they are on the ground...

If it's an insurance claim I say repaint the whole hood unless they're extremely good, odds are you'll see the repainted area. Unfortunately our hoods are very susceptible to damage in those large flat areas.

Depends on who does the paintless dent removal. Living in hail country I had a week old Navigator get pounded on the way home from work and took it to where my insurance company suggested (Ford body shop). Couldn't tell where the dents were after it was done and I tried in every light I could find.
If it needs to be refinished spot repair and blend base coat then clear coat entire panel. They have blending additives for clear but it's not worth the expense and effort IMHO.

Thanks for the tips. The gauge of steel used on these older trucks is certainly heavier than new vehicles. Maybe that makes the "dent pro" process harder since the metal is harder to straighten out?

Trying to turn lemons into lemonade. Was playing with the idea of deleting the antenna and getting the hole filled when in the shop (for a cleaner look). Got the idea from another thread. But not sure how you replace the antenna? New windshield with built in antenna?
