what do i do with the first box..it tells me no reciepient defined..? is this required to send message..?

That's where you put the name of the member you want to send the message to.

If you're PMing someone from inside a thread, just press the PM icon under their avatar/name and it'll automatically start one to them. If you're going from scratch, type their user name in the box or click the "find a member" link and search for it then click Add. You can PM multiple members that way.
