Cab to far gone?
I have a 71 longbed F100 and I'm not really sure if the cab is worth the work to fix it. The driver side floorpan you can see through(I could probably kick my feet through it with ease) the cab corners are gone, the cab mounts are toast, the support that runs along the middle of the cab on one side is non existent. Part of me is very intrigued at the thought of piecing all of this back together. I have never done any body work at all though or really any mechanicing period. Is this way to much to even attempt?

Re: Cab to far gone?
The only difficult part is that some welding will have to be done, it's unavoidable. Almost all of the sheet metal you're talking about is available aftermarket, except the inside cab corner pieces and maybe the under cab support and those can be pieced together or scavenged. There are a number of threads here that will show you what and how to do it. Virtually everybody has replaced their floor pans and cab corners and many have replaced their cab mounts.

Re: Cab to far gone?
You might also check the cowl for leaks or rust through, and around the windsheild wiper pivots. Wouldn't hurt to pour some water into the cowl grille, test to see if any water gets inside the cab. Pretty difficult areas to repair, and you definitely don't want any water leaking into the cab!
The drip rail/gutter above the windsheild is another place to check for rust, and the vertical gutter at the rear of the door jamb, it's spot welded to the cab, I see a lot of trucks with rust through there too. Poke the areas with an awl or screwdriver, see if it easily goes through.
Sheet metal work on the cab can be pretty tricky and time consuming. Got any pics?

I don't have any pics yet. I need to read all the sticky's on how to re-size images and I'll try an get some shots of all the things that I can see wrong. Maybe an opinion or two from some of you guys more familiar with what to look for will see something too. A guy I work with is just trying to convince me into buying a completely different truck. This one was my dad's when I was little and he sold it about 3yrs ago and I happened to find it on craigslist and get it back in the family so I'm kinda attached to it.

This is the area they are talking about on the cowl and firewall area.

Re: Cab to far gone?
This part was fine on mine and the pivots to the left and right had rusted out. I took the cowl off to get to them, which I needed to remove torque boxes also to get it off. Lots of spot welds.

Re: Cab to far gone?
I've seen worse. Check out Jerry's http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... a&start=45 middle of page 4, and Tyler's http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... &sk=t&sd=a bottom of page 1, and Patrick's http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... &start=105 on page 8. All had similar issues like you, and me, and they're coming out beautifully (way to go guys!).

That's the spirit! Nothing like living on the edge.
I recommend getting your cab mounts and floor pans from Dennis Carpenter. A little higher but much better quality.

Re: Cab to far gone?
Is there a specific name for what I'm calling a cab support under that passenger side? Don't know if anybody sells that particular part but it's probably going to be easier to find if I know what it's called ![Very Happy :D](./images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif)

It's called the cab floor support brace. http://www.npdlink.com/store/products/c ... 50849.html or http://www.autobodyspecialt.com/cgi-bin ... ey=CMB-120 Tyler has a pic in his build thread, http://www.fordification.com/forum/view ... a&start=15 about 2/3 of the way down on page 2 (Thanks, Tyler!).
