Cab repair advice needed

Post by thejunkman »

So my 67 has a pretty ratty floor and probably wasted cab mounts, as I can feel and hear it bind around turns. This winter I plan on buying new floor pans and cab mounts as needed. My first order of business is to remove the front clip and inspect the cab mounts. Question is, if I remove the front clip and seat etc, can I access it all enough to weld in the new metal, or do I have to pull the cab off the frame? Space is limited at my garage right now, so I need to plan what all will need removed and where I am going to put it. I know a lot of you guys have done these repairs, so I need your input on the best course of action. I'm hoping after the front clip is removed, at worst I can jack the cab up off the frame enough to get my work done. What do you think?

The floor pan work can be done all from the inside so no big deal. With the cab mount, the hardest part is going to be removal of the old and correctly locating the new on the cab floor. You'll either have to grind through or drill out the spot welds on the cab mount and those may be difficult/awkward to with the cab on the frame. If you're going to be replacing the floor pans and cab mounts for sure, the easiest route would be removing the entire floor pan from the seam, halfway up the inside of the firewall, to the seat mounting pedestal, and from the door to the tranny hump. That way you take the cab mount out with the floor pan. The replacement floor pan covers that entire area but don't start cutting until you get them so you don't cut too much out. Then your only concern is getting the new mount located properly on the new cab floor. Here's a few members cab mount replacement stories to let you know what you're in for. They pulled their cabs off but you can see what you would have to do while it's on the frame and determine if it's something you want to tackle.

thanks Sarge! Those are some helpful threads.it looks like what I want to do can be done, so ill give it a shot. The good news is that I have no time constraints, other than wanting to bring her back out on the road after winter. I parked it a month ago, and miss it already.

Went out to the shop tonight and started ripping down the ford. It looks as bad as I expected but could be worse. And I've seen a lot worse. Lots of makeshift repairs have been done. I'm almost afraid to rip them all out. But I'm confident I can fix it properly. I will have to take pics and maybe start a project thread. I'm not a great welder but I think this truck is going to help me practice. My goal is to do it all properly. No tiger hair on this rig.

Digital cam broke, and I'm probably the only person in America without a camera phone besides my grandmother, but I completely tore the ford down tonight. Its barebones. The front cab mounts are completely gone, which explains a lot of my steering binding problems. I have a unique plan as far as lining it all up. When I get my cam working again a build thread starts.
