painting Saturday

Post by jimmy828 »

Finally get to put some color on interior/exterior of cab Saturday :hd: . Talk about the " many hours" it takes for prep work starting by replacing sheetmetal down to the final sanding of 2 coats of primer but i know it will take only a few minutes to spray the color. What a job that was just to get cab ready. Next weekend i'll be doing doors and fenders.

:help: Got the cab painted but not happy with. Using single stage paint, i applied the first coat and it looked great. Let it flash like directions said, applied the 2nd coat and orange peel started. The 1st coat had no orange peel. What did i do wrong and can the single stage be wet sanded and then buffed? The paint is acrylic urethane.

When you say single stage and acrylic urethane, it is a 2 part (paint+hardener) system, correct?

Had a friend that works in body shop. I managed to get him to come by and take a look at paint job to see what is the best way to cure orange peel. He mentioned that since the OP is uniform all over the truck, that the temperature was too high and i should sand the truck again and apply a good coat at a more reasonable temp such as around 70 degree. He said other than that the spraying was good, no runs, no sags, no dry spots. Looks like i got my job cut out for me by sanding again.

Did you mix your paint all at once or each coat at a time? Sometimes-especially if it's pretty warm-the paint can start to cure between coats if it is all mixed beforehand. That will prevent the second coat from laying down correctly. But sometimes even if you do everything right-the paint just won't cooperate. I had some paint problems last week even when I followed the manufacturers recommendations to the letter.

What i've found to work best for me when painting is on the first coat to go light because its easy to get a run on the first coat. Second coat i go a little heavyer, I use the shine or laydown of the paint as a guide as to how much i spray. Its always better to use a smaller tip like a 1.4mm than a 1.8mm in my opinion because you can move a little slower with a 1.4 and keep a better eye on how the paint is laying down for you.
Orange peel is basicly not quite enuff paint on that coat. I like to use LOTS of flood lights to make it easyer to see how the paint is laying down for me when i paint.

If your paint is non matalic than you can wet sand it to a smooth finish after its dryed for about a week. If its matalic than you can't wetsand because the matalic will not blend if sanded to a smooth finish, But you can sand down smooth and respray another coat over it and have a smooth as glass paint job.

Im not a body&paint man. But i've painted my own cars, truck or whatever i need for 20 years and have had good looking paint jobs that turned out looking like a pro.

2coats/2 mixings,1.3 tip. I believe when i sand down again and paint as my friend said i think it will be ok. It's that thing called " do over ". I guess i'm learning all about the paint business the hard way.

Don't sweat it! My dad started working in local body shops when he was still in his early teens, every once in a while I'd hear him yell "what the #%@*!" That usually meant I was going to have to cut and buff that week. EVERYONE who does paint is gonna need a "do over"!

Don't some pros wet sand between coats, or at least a final sanding/polish to eliminate the orange peel?
