I've decided that i don't want to mess with the old tailgate - too much rust - and willing to replace it. Anyone know good source/price for a replacement? I see the ones on Blu Oval but can't tell if it is the right one or what kind of quality. I have a 68' Ranger short box.
Thanks all

Re: Need New Tailgate
Keep an eye out on Seattle Craigslist, I was able to find 2 new takes-offs. They still come up for sale sometimes, be sure to check Portland CL as well.
I think I paid $100. each.
Here's one...pricey, but new.

Re: Need New Tailgate
Picked up a nice tailgate. Is there a trick to getting it re-installed. How do you get the tailgateback over the hinge posts? I'm going to try to remove the hinge posts and tape them into the tailgate, slide it all down and bolt everything back together. Let me know if there is an alternative method. Thanks

Re: Need New Tailgate
Uncool the side hinges from the gate. Drop it down a little below horizontal and it pulls off the hinge pivots. No need to unbolt anything. They can be a little stubborn. Might have to wiggle and work it out.

Not on a an old (pre 80's Ford) that hasn't been modified.sargentrs wrote: Drop it down a little below horizontal and it pulls off the hinge pivots. No need to unbolt anything. They can be a little stubborn. Might have to wiggle and work it out.
You need to unbolt one hinge and tip the gate up to remove the hinge.
When they're real rusty you just pry the box side over.

Re: Need New Tailgate
A combination of the above posts did the trick. I removed one of the hinge posts amd left the other one in. The one that stayed bolted allowed me to balance and pivot the other side into place with the hinge post unbolted from the truck. Once I got the unbolted hingpost in place I was able to bolt them into place and assemble the remaining hardware.
