Silicone Mess

Post by 68 Ford Stepside »

A couple months ago I had a local glass company replace the rear window rubber on my truck. They used some type of liquid silicon to make the rubber slippery for installation. I've washed it several times with soap & water. Still every morning there are streaks of silicone running down the glass. I wonder how long before this stuff finally goes away. :?

I've never heard of anyone using any kind of silicone (I assume we're talking about the spray that is like WD40) to put a window in. I always just use a little soapy water in a spray bottle. But, to get rid of the silicone, try a strong degreaser like Purple Power or Super Clean-both are available at Wal-Mart in the section where they sell the car wash stuff. Keep us posted.

:yt: silicone sealer should not be used to install a window, (unless the gasket was shot) and this is the shops way of not replacing it. Soap and water is all that's required to install the windows in our trucks properly. Maybe try some lacquer thinner to get the silicone off as much as possible, (not letting the lacquer touch your paint of course).

This is not a sealing grade silicone. It is in liquid form in a can with a dauber. If the same shop puts in my windshield, I won't let them use it again. White streaks down the glass everyday is very aggravating.

I got my T-bird in May of '06, and when it got hot that summer I had a mess on my hands. The previous owner had used some kind of mystery goop on the windshield presumably to seal a leak. Whatever it was melted and dripped on my dash for 2 years and resembled tar of some kind. I was afraid to pull the windshield because it had a crack near the bottom edge, and well....I was too cheap to buy a new one! That was until a rock forced my hand. Amazing how one person's shortcut becomes another's stumbling block.

Maybe you could blow it out with the power washer at the carwash. Seems to do pretty good at getting crap from behind trim and stuff so it might clean out the left over silicone that keeps ozzing out.

Hope I never have anyone use whatever they used again.
