Dana 44 swap
My 67 F250 4x4 will be getting the axle treatment very soon. I have read the forums and tech pages for power steering set up, and have purchased a 74 D44 with discs and calipers. I have measured the pads and they look to be the same. I bought the entire power steering package from a 76 F250 2wd. I am confident I can do the mods.
Unfortunately the ratio for the front is 3.54 and the rear is 4.56. I think I want the rear to match the front, and my confidence has turned into a quivering mass of bovine excrement. Regearing a Dana 60 requires proper setup and special tooling(I think). Gear sets and rebuild kits and shop fee's will destroy my budget. I am not building a trailer queen, this is my truck.
My question is this........should I buy another D60 or regear? If I regear, do I have to totally rebuild it? Can I use used gears?
Thanx

If you re-gear it you will need to purchase another carrier to handle the 3:54 R&P. As far as a total rebuild, "Yes". Just the center though.
It would cost you allot more to re-gear, but you might spend some time finding a good 3:54 9"rearend.
Oh by the way
to the site. Please fell free to hit the :welcome mat" and intro yourself and your Ford. We like pics if you have any.

Alrighty then. I will look for a 3.54 rear end and swap it. Mckenna is a bit far to drive for a rear end. I will get a Dana 60 due to the fact I just replaced every brake componant, and I can reuse most of it. I will read the forums again and find what years have the same width spring perches. I don't have a cutting torch, just a welder. I need to keep this truck under budget. I AM going to get this truck done as a budget rod. I will be painting in Jan. I have to get the frame work and suspension completed. I will post some pics as soon as I can figure out how to post pics. Thanx guys.

You did say a F250,
sorry. It might be a bite harder to find a D60 w/ 3:54.

used gears are ok as long as someone has marked the backlash, pinon depth and runout on them but that never happensboots wrote:im not sure if you have to re-gear it, I really dont think you do.....but I would never buy used gears.

In life many men take the path of righteousness, some take the path many others follow (G.M. owners, for example), some take a more arduous path, some a simpler path. I, sir, took the PSYCO-PATH!!

I thought the Dana 60 was a option on the 97 F350(?). However, the Sterling axles made for Ford will work just fine if the width is nearly the same. As far as I can tell face to face will be 1.4" wider on a Sterling. The axle should be a 6.5" stud pattern. 170mm stud pattern should be on the 99 and above(?) and does the ujoint input sit in the same place as my 67 yoke? Thanx
