New Vintage F350 Scamper Owner

Post by LuvMyScamper »

Hello everyone,

My name is Cindy and I'm from Springhill, Nova Scotia. My hubby and I just bought a vintage '71 F350 Scamper motorhome, and it came with lots of papers giving clues as to its history and previous owners. I'm really enjoying researching the truck and finding out about it's history and specifications. First of all, here is a picture of the Scamper:

And here is a pic of the truck's VIN tag on the driver's door:

I've been to your VIN decoding page (which was a great help btw), and have discovered that the truck came with a 390 engine. I believe the engine in it now is a 360 though, according to the breather cover. It also has a C6 transmission. They lady we bought it from has had it for the last 11 years of the truck's 40-year life and they never replaced the engine so it must have been a previous owner. The odometer read 15,000 miles, so it probably has 115,000 miles on it (this is consistent with some repair receipts through the years that recorded the mileage). It was stored in a garage every winter for the past 11 years. The camper was built by a company in Lethbridge, Alberta called Pre-Built Manufacturing.

One thing I'm a bit puzzled about is the rear axle (it's a Dana 70B with dual wheels). The axle code in the VIN is 36, but under the 1971 VIN decoder that number is not there. The number is there under 1968 though, so I assume it's the same.

I have a question about the rear axle and pinion seal so I'll go post that in the appropriate section.

Cheers!
Cindy

Welcome to the site. Great looking vehicle. Ford produced cab and aftermarket vendor provided camper. When you figure fuel mileage would be interested and knowing what you got.

Thanks everyone! Our first tank of gas it got about 8.5mpg, but this was driving up and down a mountain twice. I bet on fairly flat driving it will get about 10mpg. Good thing we don't plan to take it far! lol The place we want to take it most is where we bass fish and that's about an hour away. The plan is to park it down at the beach (a friend of ours owns land and is letting us park it there for free) and use our car to run back and forth home. Here she is, as our "bass fishing base camp":

Neat looking truck, from the engine bay picture it has aux heat in the camper? Good to see another dually on the road, surprised it's only a 8300lb truck, not a 10k with the extended frame and camper body.

Very nice truck! I was surprised to see Scamper as I'd owned a Scamper pop-up camper and thought they were made in N.Y. state somewhere? Las search I'd done though, the company Scamper had gone out of business?

I do love the fishing hole Cindy!

Jamie
That would probably explain what this is:

There is a switch in the closet by the power inverter that turns it on, and when we turned it on to test it the fan ran but there was no heat. We were wondering if drew coolant from the engine for heat. Now we know, thanks!

Are you sure it's not "Skamper" that is made in NY as opposed to "Scamper"? I was in touch with another Scamper owner from Alberta with the exact same truck, except his was a 1970, and he told me where they were made and actually told me about a guy who used to build them at Pre-Built Mfg. between 1968-1971 who still works at an RV dealer in Alberta. He said if I emailed him he could answer any questions I had about the camper. I have his email address and will find out more. He told me he blew up two two C6 transmissions in his truck. The first one never had a transmission cooler, and then for the next one he put a cooler on it but it was too small and he blew that one up too. But then he put a bigger one on for the third tranny and he never had a problem after that. Our truck has a tranny cooler, but I don't know if it's considered a big one or not. I'm assuming our truck has the C6 tranny as well because I think that's all Ford put in their heavy-duty trucks if I'm not mistaken.

Cheers,
Cindy

We left this little sign in the RV:

Btw...forgive me for my ignorance, but I notice you guys call these trucks "bumps". What does that mean? I feel kinda silly for asking, but if I start saying I have a bump I want to know why! lmao

Love your truck!!

To answer your Bump question, the 67-72 body style has the "Bump" running down the side of the truck earning these trucks the nickname "Bumpside" or "Bump". The earlier model are called "Slicks" and the later model had a "Dent" running down the side where our bump is, so they are called "Dentsides" or "Dents". Now you know!
