power steering pump noise

Post by '75-4x4guy »

I was wondering if anyone knows why ford power steering pumps are so noisy ?
Is it the actual design of the pump?

I run a inline filter in my steering system which should cut down on any foreign dirt in the system , but still the pump is noisy .

I have tried the rebuilt ones and some are quiet(er) but not really THAT quiet .

anyone here ever rebuild there own? I am thinking I might do it .....that and hooking up the return line to my unused cooler in the bottom of my radiator (my truck is a manual NP435)

any thoughts ?

My theory, air.
I think air is what makes a ford power steering pump whine. Unless, thats not the noise your talking about.
A filter is a good idea.
A cooler is a great idea too although I dont know if I would use the cooler in the radiator for that.
I think an auxilary cooler could keep it much cooler than the raditors trans cooler could.

I dont think theres much you can rebuild yourself inside one of those pumps besides replacing the seals.

Old Ford P.S. pumps are noisy. Mine whines at high RPM or under load. They all do it no matter if it is rebuilt or used. Some more then others. Best bet is to go with another manufacture and build some brackets to adapt it to your engine. Or, just live with the whine. I live with the whine and tell everyone its my X haunting me.
