New guy in GA - 1970 F100 Sport Custom

Post by atye »

Hello all!
I am a "newbie" to the truck world. I've been involved in the vintage air-cooled Volkswagen scene for years so I am no stranger to old vehicles. I just purchased a 1970 F100 Sport Custom longbed from a co-worker. The truck is in great shape overall and as far as I know just needs a tune-up and radius arm bushings. It has a 302 V8, automatic transmission, and drum brakes. I hope to upgrade the brakes ASAP and have a couple of very cool junkyards around my area that should have tons of spares for me.

Well, here are the "before" pics:

My plans are to go more "vintage" with the appearance and more "modern" with the drivetrain.
Ex: swap the aftermarket wheels for steelies w/hubcaps, lose the chrome step bumper for a sport bumper, remove all of the aftermarket driving lights, etc.

More pics to come!

Thanks for the compliments...

It's a sweet truck, no doubt about it, but I just like more of the Resto-Mod thing. I want vintage looks with modern drive-ability (and MPG!)

Very nice looking truck. Vicki and I each had a Bug, 66, and a 68.

Good morning Alex,

That's quite the preserved truck to be posting "before" photos of--those look more like "after" photos to me!

Do you happen to know about the truck's life up until now? Has it had any major overhauling and/or restoration work, or was it garage-kept?

I just bought it from a co-worker who just never had the time to drive it. Very nice, clean truck. The paint's clear coat is shot in places and it has a nick or two here and there, but is very solid. The bed has been replaced with welded-in steel sheets and coated with spray-on bedliner. I haven't looked at the bed from the underside yet, not sure what I will find! One small rust hole in the driver's side floor right under the parking brake release and the windshield needs replacing. The 302 needs a tune-up and the radius arm bushings are shot. That's all I know of, really, that needs "fixin" as we say down here in GA. I could have done a lot worse, to be sure!

I removed the aftermarket lights from the front last night as I slowly go more "original" on the outward appearance. Going to the nearest Pull-A-Part this weekend to see what they have for me.

Oh, it has add-on under dash A/C that isn't working. The blower fan works but there is no drive belt on the A/C compressor, so, who knows what it needs...

:wel: from central TX. I like the front end. I think both extra sets of light is a bit much but it look good none the less. Good luck with the new project.
