I fliped the hanger

Post by sport71 »

I fliped the hanger to lower the rear and of course the pinion is off. I put a 6* shim which is a bit to much. So I took it to my local 4x4 shop and the guy there confermed it. He also said that since I droped the front hanger that I should do the same in the back. I thought that the pinion angle could be fixed just by shims alone, or do you think that this guy just wants to make money off of me by adding hangers and more labor= $375? (the shims $20 at home)? :hmm:

No, you don't need to drop the rear hangers to match. You simply need the correct shim.

Like keith said all you need is a shim. I flipped the rear hanger on my highboy to lift it and it had a BAD pinion problem went to the 4x4 shop I think I used 6* but it seems to be ok now.

That's what I figured, just that I couldn't get the guy to tell me otherwise. I just orderd two sets of 2.5* and one set of 4*
I know that it will work with just shimming it, and every little thing that I'm doing for final adjustments are sure making my truck better.

I'm glad that every thing turned out good for you. It seems to me that everyone down here just wants to take my money. :(

Oh they were trying to get me to bring it to them but I wasn't about to do that becuase I had a good idea what they where gonna try and do and how much they where gonna try and get me to pay  the olny thing I had to do for the shims was make the nipples on the factory blocks longer so that might be something you'll have to do on your springs but idk.

It vibrates when you accelerate.
I'll post how it comes out once I put the correct angle shims.

Hey sport71,
Each truck is different but I did the half hanger flip and I had to use 6 degrees shims.
Kind of a trial and error thing.
Good luck and get us a couple pics. when you're done.

The difference is that not everyone has the same weight rating springs in the rear and some springs are arc'd more or sagged more than others, thus the need for different degree shims to bring the pinion angle back within specification. Plus not everyone bolts the front shackle back on the frame in exactly the same spot. The easiest way to determine what shim you need is measure the pinion angle before after the shackle flip and then subtract the before number from the after number.

You all are not going to beleve how much angle I needed. I needed 8.5* I couldn't beleve it. But that's what it needed, and now it's smooth running with no vibration. I am going to put the correct lowering hangers on it because on the rear shackle I have no flex for a softer ride. I rely don't know yet though.

I'm in the process of flipping my front hangers also. I started out just going to change my center support for the drive shaft and the next thing I know I was cutting the heads off the factory rivets. I'm having a hard time drilling out the center of the rivets but I'm getting there. Wish I had taking pics before I started. Going to post pics when I'm finish.
