Spewing power steering pump

Post by f1shermun »

I have a 72 f-250. I havent had any issues with the power steering until recently. If I am at a dead stop and cut the wheels from left to right the pump will spew fluid. It will only do it at an idle.Is this normal?

Do you have any idea what might cause it?

Mine will do that with the engine stopped, but at an idle, it does fine.

Does the steering work okay above an idle, or have you noticed either a slight or noticeable change?

look at picture number 7 and read below it under diagnosing power steering complaint. it is a stuck relief in the pump. http://www.fordification.com/tech/PDF/F ... gnosis.pdf

okay, i bought a new pump from autozone and a new pressure line. I dont seem to have any leaks but I have new issues. The pump has a steady whine and It doesnt seem to have the pressure to turn my wheels to the right. I thought it was air in the system. I lifted the wheels off of the ground and turned the wheels back and forth until I almost had a blister and It is still hard to the right. I am beginning to think that the pump is junk. Any ideas?

the ford pumps origninaly used type F transmission fluid in them not power steering fluid. that may be why it whines.

Do you think I should drain all of the type F out and fill it with power steering fluid? Any ideas on why it would be hard to steer to the right?

no it should have tpe f fluid in it. not power steering fluid. if that isnt the problem i think there is a tsb about the pump whine. it might be under the pump rebuild page it is called power steering noise complaint.

There was a pin hole in the pressure line that was sucking air into the system. I replaced the line and followed the steps listed in the above posts. The remaining air eventually worked its way out. I now have good steering but the new ATCO pump i have is still whining. Autozone offered to replace the pump. With all of the trouble and money to get the air out of this one I am hesitant to pursue the free replacement.
