steer that thang

Post by timmytim »

I just bought this 70 f100 and what little I know about truck I've learned the hard way. It came from factory with a 3 on the tree but know sports a auto on the column. Although it is a manuel steer i believe it has the power steering column. The reason I think this is because about 2 inches down the column where it is mounted to the dash is a bracket that is welded to column. The bracket that is holding up the column to the dash isnt welded to it. Is there a way to tell which column I have? :help:

well i thought the column to dash bracket was in a different place on the columns. but i just went to try and verify this in my stack of columns. and i cant verify it now. and i know two of these columns are manual steering. but i am trying to compare 73-77 automatic power steering columns 67-72 power steering columns to 67-72 manual steering 3 spd columns. there seem to be several different brackets i am looking at. the 73-77 column brackets are slotted longer than the 67-72 brackets. yet the 67-72 manual steerign columns seem to have the shorted holes to mount to the dash. i probably need to get them all together and take a picture of them. that may clear things up. but the best way to tell is the center steering shaft length. here is a picture of a manual steering shaft lenght on the outside of the firewall. if yuors is shorter than this picture. you have a power steering column shaft.this column may be out of adjustment. so this isnt a perfect picture. but it can give you the diea on how to tell abotuthe length of the inner shaft on the outside of the firewall. edit: this is a 3 spd column in a automatic trasn floor shift truck. a custom job done by someone else.

if the original bracket is lower than the bracket thats actually holding it in, I'd say you have a power steering column with manual steering. I did the same thing for a while before I finished my ps conversion. makes it a little more comfortable to drive
