Brake line

Post by grncustomf100 »

:help:
Rear brakes. Where the hard lines come into the brass T fitting with the rubber line going up to the frame and back into the hard line going to the front.

1)Is the rubber line sold with the brass fitting already attached on the axle end and the fitting already attached on the frame end where it goes back to hard line? Is it sold as one piece?

2)The screw that holds the brake t-fitting in place on the rear axle, with the rubber hose attached that goes up to the frame and just hanging loose. The screw actually goes in the rear axle. No function served w/ brakes other that holding t-fitting. What is this for?? Why is it screwed into the axle? What purporse does in serve?

Thanks in advance!! :fr:

1) EDIT to remove misinformation
a generic pic for reference of non one piece design

generic pic for reference of the one piece design (this one's a "Y" instead of a "T", but same idea)

2) that is also your axle vent. The bolt should be hollow. Should have a hose going well out of the way of splash water and muck (frame as yo stated) . (the little rattle type vent caps are the only way to go if you have to replace missing parts).
another generic pic to show the vent "breather" (several types, this is ONE)

As to the vent breathers, I normally just grab a few from the tops of FWD (easier to get to) transmissions while I'm at the junkyard. Pennies and you can get the good ones (metal).

1)So the crimped end is actually threaded onto the brass T? I havent yet tried to unscrew that part yet.

2)This line as clogged, even though is goes well above the frame. The axle screw part is clogged as well.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Actually I need to correct myself. I'm thinking of the newer stuff I work on here and there.... .... ....

Edited my last post to show both types.

Some of the rear lines DO have the TEE as the crimped fitting, and if memory serves, I think ours ARE in fact one piece.

Sorry,

our truck have the crimped hose onto the t. i have seen these for sale but when i saw them they said they were for the 73-79 trucks. my bet is they will probably work. but it could be a Y instead of a Tee. but mayeb not. i am guessing that mightbe the difference in them. i have to leave now but i will be back and find where i saw them at.

ok lmc truck is where i saw them at they have them fo rour trucks as well as the dentsides. the part numebr is 45-4454. the description says brake hose. that is all i know. i assume it is the hose and Tee all in one but never assume anything. call them and ask fo rsure. if they have it the other vendors should also have them. lmc only buys and sell. they do not make the parts or probably dotn have and exclusive contract to be the only ones to sell this part.

It is in fact a Y intead of a T.

The axle end (the Y end) is still in good shape, but the frame end is lookn rough. So I will be replaceing this piece.

Stay tuned for more questions that will be coming as I go along on my brake rebuild!

Thanks guys

For #2: Unscrew it from the axle. Clean it out with a drill bit or other pointy device, spray it out then reinstall with a new length of hose.

Thats exactly what I did. I also noticed when I initally unscrewed it, that it was under pressure. Hose and vent screw are now both open and clean.

Thanks guys!!

I just went through this brake line problem I swapped in a 84 dana 70 into the 71 f350. my normal parts house wanted 50$ for the 71 hose with t (one piece)and I would have had to order it. i went to Napa and they build DOT brake hose in any configuration. so for 30 bucks I got a extended brake line that fit the 84 diff and a frame end that fit the 71. not that the the 84 line wouldnt have worked but its nice to get exactly what you want.
