wheel hop help

Post by killakobra »

i moved the truck around the driveway a couple days ago because a friend needed exhaust repairs. while backing the truck up the drive(it's fairly steep) my truck started boucing pretty badly and wouldn't move without revving more than i like. i've never had this problem before but i usually take off from the flat part of the driveway at the bottom. i suspect that my springs may be too soft. if i stand on the back, the truck squats down 3-4 inches(i weigh ~ 235). what do you guys think?

a few thoughts: the brakes over tightened. the drums rusted up. the brakes fell apart and were getting stuck.

I dont understand the part where you said "it wouldnt move without revving it"

Do you mean it wouldnt move as in something was in a bind keeping the truck from moving or was it just bouncing like crazy.

Is your drive gravel or a paved surface?

Does it have a couple of leafs missing? Mine was doing this after we pulled a couple out. Put new tires and shocks on the rear and hasnt happened since.

the rear end bounces like crazy and the whole truck shakes. my driveway is paved with a few loose pebbles. as far as i know it's the from-factory leaf pack. it has brand new tires and shocks.

If this truck is a stick then your clutch could be warped. Warped clutches seem to show up more in reverse and they 'shudder' enough to make it feel like the truck is bouncing. Revving the engine higher and riding the clutch overcomes some of the 'shudder".

i don't think it's the clutch. the plate is fairly new. when backing up, you can see the tire and wheel through the bed and they are bouncing all over the place. my question is will a stiffer spring pack help?

I would look at the shocks befor I changed out the springs. Maybe one of your shocks is blown out? Have you checked your shock mounts? One of them could be broken as well.

In theory, the stiffer springs should work. If they have more leafs, its going to raise the truck up a little.

the shocks were fine when i installed them 3 months ago brand new. i know the mounts are good because i can bouncy on the back and nothing gives. the reason i think the springs are shot is if i jump in the bed, the suspension bottoms out.

got one spring pack changed out yesterday. took 4 and a half hours..... with help. the bolt placement on a stepside is not idea in any stretch of th imaginination. alot of the bouncy is gone when i jump on the back now so hopefully this cures the wheel hop.

ps: i am changing out both packs by the way.

got the other side finished today about an hour faster and a set of hands less than yesterday. as far as helping, i will have to test it out when i get home from school tomorrow so i don't aggrivate the neighbors. after changing out the spring, the bumper sits about 4 inches higher than before . it gives the truck a nice rake.
