Cam freezes up

Post by wcm413 »

I tried a search but didn't have any luck . I'm putting a new cam and timing gear
in my 460 but when I tighten the timing gear the cam freezes up . Anybody know what
might be happening ? Can you use some sort of shim to fix the problem ? I appreciate any
help . I'm anxious to get it running , I've been getting all the parts together for 2 years .

I know that some Fords have a spacer behind the timing gear but some aftermarket gears are designed to use the spacer and some have it built in. Also ensure you have the proper bolts in the cam retainer they could be hitting the gear if they are too tall.

Perhaps the camshaft retainer is not on correctly? Be sure the side with the small oil passage faces the block.

Other than that, maybe you have the incorrect camshaft timing gear?
