I like to change the original point & condencsor and coil ignition system in my 1972 F100 302, too the duraspark II system.
I have the BLUE strian module, large cap, rotor, cap adaptor, 8mm ign. wires, hi top coil, distributor & p/u module that came off of various later years of ford p/u's & vans having the 302 engine. The only part I do not have yet is the 1.05-1.15 ohm ballast resistor.
I have read in previous posts, that the original coil + source wire having the (pink resistor wire) which is inside the loom starting about 4" from the ignition switch RUN terminal MUST NOT BE USED.
Question:
Why can't the original wire with the built in resistor wire for the coil + side remain and be used, it already has a length of resistor wire built into it to feed the (Bat.+) side of the coil. Is it less or more then correct resistance value needed for the Duraspark II hi top coil .
I had attach a voltmeter to the coil + side and this is what readings showed. Everything still being original.
Key OFF = 0. volts
Key ON engine OFF= 6.34. volts
Engine running @ 700 RPM= 10 to 11.5 volts
Engine running @ 2500 RPM 14.2 volts
Question:
Are any of the voltags above too high which will eventually overheat and cook the Duraspark II modules or the hi top coil if I leave and use the original existing coil + side wire with the built in resistor wire.

why not change to a TFI style coil and be done with it?? No resistor needed. The DII module will run on 12v just fine.
As a metter of fact, i AM trying to keep up with the Jones'

The coil needs the voltage reduced, but the module needs 12volts. If you go tfi coil you can run 12 volts to both coil and module.

Or, do what I did...found a buddy with a MSD 6AL and a Blaster SS coil for CHEAP.

Or a HEI 4 pin module mounted out of site, high performance 12v coil and Duraspark II distributor. BUT to answer your question I thought when I was running one I used the stock resistor wire?

What year harness did you pull? ballast resistance is 1.25-1.35 from 74-76, it decreased to 1.05-1.15 in 77.cheech63 wrote:I like to change the original point & condencsor and coil ignition system in my 1972 F100 302, too the duraspark II system.
