the 428 requires the 390 to be bored way out. some blocks cant handle the boring to make it all the way to 428. the block needs to be sonic checked before it is bored. to see if the cylinder walls will take the boring out that far.

you will have to bore you block to 4.132 inches from the 4.052 of the 390 , Then you will need a 428 crank and rods to achive the 3.98inch stroke PAW offers a master rebuild kit for a 428 that includes crank and rods, its actually easier to make a 427 out of a 390 becuase both motor share the same stroke you will just need to bore you block to the 4.232 inches and add new pistons. eiter way to notice any real difference in power you will need to up grade your heads .

The chances are that unless your 390 block is a truck or heavy duty block it will be unsuitable for boring to 428 (or 427 for that matter).

You can probably do a 410 + .30 though.

You can get the 4.25 stroke crank with pistons and rods, I think survival perfomance. And you don't have to mess with the bore being over sized, the wall being to thin. :2cents:

There's some good information on creating a 428 from an FT (medium-duty) truck engine in the Bumpwiki:

Just to add, so no one attempts it without checking the block.

Any attempt to bore a standard 390 block to a 427 bore will result in paper thin cylinder walls at best and no cylinder walls at all at worst.

See wes's cronical of the "poor mans 427".

Like duckryder said, you could just use a 428 crank and 390 pistons to make a 410 if you are fixed on keeping your block.

If you go that rout you need to get an outer balancer as well  if you can locate one.

yeah I'm with them on this if your gonna use the block you have if you bore it .030 over it'd be a 415Cid or go to a engine core place and get a 428 Block that will have a standard bore of 4.132" . then you could bore it .050 over and put a 4.250" Stroke Scat Crank in it and build you a 467Cid FE ;) ;)

There are two ways to deal with the balance.

You can run a 428 flywheel or flex plate (balancer is the same).

or

You can have the crank internally balanced using Mallory metal.

Edit: Oh one other thing, you need to use 390 TRUCK pistons or specific pistons designed for a 410-style engine. Therefore, 428 crank, 390,410,428 rods (not 360/352 thin rods), and 410 pistons (which 390 truck pistons are). We have discussed this quite a bit and few searches should turn up more information than you will ever need.
