You can not put a 351c crank into a m block and here is why , the 351c had a deck Hieght of 9.206 inches the 351m has a deck hieght of 10.297. the cleveland also has smaller main journals than the M motor 2.74 vs. 3.00 of The 351m. if you want to make a 351m perform the best thing you can do is change the cam shaft ford used a retarded timing cam in the 351-400 so by putting a nice towing cam with a good t-chain (not factory becuase it has the retard timing key) Edelbrock makes a good one or Summit racing brand, you will notice a huge increase in power. The 351M alos suffered from a lack of comprestion 8.3:1 from the factory this can besolved 2 ways plane you heads .010 and bore your block >030 over this with new TRW pistons will give you close to 9-1 Or pick up a set of Aussie Heads these will give you 10.1 comp. just buy bolting them on you can still run pump gas but will need to run 93 octane they where the only 2v heads that had a small chamber and will bolt up to you factory intake and exhuast of the 351M . these heads can be bought of e-bay for around $400.00 dollers they have a small 58cc combution chamber vs. the M Head's 79cc, You can use cleveland Heads but all of the us 2v heads for the c motor's had a 76.4 cc chamber so you wont gane much, The 4v US head had a 62 cc chambers so you will gane compresion but will need spacers for the intake and special headers to run them on your 351m Block Since they have huge 4V ports. Alot of people would through a 460 in but you will be ganing 175 lbs, and the 460 will not take the rpm like a well built 351m-400 motor . Hope this helps

Pull out the 351M and drop a 460 in there. Gives you all kinds of room to grow. Keep it stock and have plenty of torque and get about 15 mpg or build it up and have all the torque and HP you could ask for.

Nice. Thanks a lot for the info' guys I really appreciate it. I guess I'll just keep the old Cleveland's block/crank together & throw em' back in storage then.... If the heads are the same & are a "bolt-on" mod, (even if only a slight increase) I guess I'll just give them a nice one over with a polish & all new valves, springs, rods & rockers & plan to use them on my 351M "Refresh" .... My 351C is indeed a 2V & came out of my old 72' Gran Torino Sport GT... I assume the piston chambers should be fine/the same measurement as the 79' 351M's pistons???
I'll also buy a new RV Cam & either a new double-roller timing-chain or set of timing gears.... & that should really Bring it to life eh' ? .... I'm also gonna be running the Black-Jack long-tube headers, & an the weiand "Action-Plus" aluminum intake + new carb' on it.... New rings on the pistons as well.
Later!

I'm an FE guy, I never cared for the 351M/400 engines. Until I saw one that was built right. A 351M, or a 400 if built right, can be a "small-block with a big-block attitude". It'll wind like a small-block with the torque of a big-block. ( But I'd still rather have a 390 )

I think youll be happy with a good towing cam and your cleveland haeds just remember to not over carb it a 650 edelbrock will be plenty for your set up.

I'm looking forwards to building up my 351M next year. I thing new timing gears, cam/rods/lifters & a "fresh" pair of polished Cleve' heads is gonna rock the ol' 79' Super-Cab/Long-beds world!
