4 Wheel Drive Oil Pan

I was wondering where you can get oil pans for an FE for a 1970 F100 4WD. Both me and my brother have F100 2WDs so we're new to the whole 4WD scene. We got my dad this 4WD and we're rebuilding a 390 to replace the old 360. Also, I was wondering if the windage trays and pickup for a 2WD are the same on a 4WD. Any help or recommendations would be helpful.

Hi Leavittt!

Milodon and probably several other manufacturers make aftermarket oil pans for FEs in 4x4 trucks. The big difference is that 4x4 trucks take "rear sump" oil pans instead of "front sump" pans like 4x2 trucks take.

I'm not certain about whether or not the windage trays are identical, but they may be. This is because I've noticed that the part number for the 4x2 windage tray is the same as the 4x4 windage tray, at least as far as Milodon parts are concerned. But you'd really need to check it out before buying your parts to be certain.

The pickups are definitely different. The 4x2, front-sump pan has a stubby pickup that looks like an old fashioned hearing aide (an "ear trumpet"). The 4x4, rear-sump pan has a long, elaborate pickup that looks like a tobacco pipe.

The Milodon 4x4 FE pan is the 30550. It holds eight quarts. Here's a photo of it:



It won't fit in 4x2 trucks. Here's a photo that shows how the rear-sump oil pan hits the steering linkage on 4x2 trucks.

for a stock one? the parts wanted section or ebay. how about one from and ft? i looked at one today and thought about it for my truck. but i just need something done with the dipstick tube. it is loose and no tang on it.

Thanks for the help. I might go down to the junkyard hoping to get lucky. My dad and his 4WD are down in Nevada so I can't take the pan off his 360 and the Milodon pans are a little more than I'd like to spend. At least I know my options now. Thanks again.

I think that FE's in Vans also have the rear sump style pans. Finding a van at the salvage may be easier than a 4x4.

Hey Ok68crewcab! You know, when I called Proformance Unlimited about the clearance problem I was having with my 4x4 oil pan on my 4x2 truck, they initially said that the van oil pans should match my 4x2 oil pan. But they were wrong about that for sure! So I think you're right--the vans and the 4x4s had their steering linkage in *front*, while the 4x2's had it in back (of the crossmember).
