Is this a Factory Fuel Tank Set Up?

Post by cancow »

Does this look proper? I am unable to get more than 10 gallons out of my in cab tank. Could the fuel line be too short going into the tank?

that looks factory to me. so the tank when full when only let out about half of the tank and then run out? it could be the tank line has a hole in it and wont such up the fuel past the hole.

I fill up at the pump all the way up until is actually see fuel in the neck of the filler tube. Then I drive about 100 miles and run out of gas. I fill up again with about 10 gallons max.

it sounds like the suction tube has a hole in it. i read a story here that said the tube would come out of the tank. i dont think it will. but you could try to pull it out and fix it. or just get a different tank.

Why would it not come out of the tank? Is it bigger than the hole?

its like astraw. that has a hole in the middle of it. when the liquid gets down past the hole. it will only suck the air through the hole in the tube. because it doesnt have enough pull to pick up the fuel and force it to go up past the hole.

Tube does not come out. Are you sure your cap is vented? A non-vented cap on a non-evap type tank will only allow the tank to suck half dry.

The tube in my tank got a hole in at about 1/2 tank. I took it out to clean it and seal it so while I had it out I drilled a hole near the factory tube and put in a piece of steel gasline. I left it about 3/4" from the bottom. I J-B welded the tube to the outside of the top of the tank and used a compression fiting with a screw in nipple and hooked the original gasline to it. It has worked fine now for a couple of years. I just don't let the tank get below 1/4 I really would like to get a new tank but money is tight.

Why does the "tube" not come out when there is a fitting on the tank? If what ever this tube is is the problem and it does not come out can i just drill it out and add a length of fuel line to the bottom of the tank?

A clean, used, replacement tank at the boneyard is $20-$25, why mess with it if you're sure the tube is toast? I had a similar problem once and turned out to be a plugged charcoal canister (with a non-vented cap) on an evap-equipped tank. I wound up swapping the tank out with a non-evap tank, filler neck and vented cap and eliminated the charcoal canister.

Is there a way to tell if you have a evap-equipped tank? I have the press in key lock type gas caps. They seem to be original.

No locking gas cap is original. Evap tank has vent tubes on the passenger side, top of the tank, running to a canister on the right frame rail near the core support.
About midway down you can see the emission fuel tank...
