70 F100 manual brake to power brake ?????'s

Post by fast65 »

Hi guys:

Have a leaking drum master cylinder, and been wanting to convert to PDB long term anyway.
While I have the master cylinder off, what year do I need the booster etc from?

I have access to a 71f350 with a booster now, as well as as 76 f350.
both are the type with the linkage between the firewall and the booster. Which will fit best in a f100 with a 302 Do I need the pedal or any other components out of either?

I would get the Power Drum working to keep the truck mobil, then get all the disc stuff later to upgrade.

Any help is welcome.

When I put a booster on all I did was grab the booster off of my 72 CS and bolted it up. The olny things I can think of you'll need are the brackets, bolts, and the rod that goes from the master cylinder to the pedal. Other than that just bolt it up and hook that vaccume hose to the back of the 302 intake.

I got mine from a 72 F250. I like it because it is the smaller diameter booster. Not sure if the year or F250 part made that change or not. I used all of the parts from the F250 and it all bolted right up except I did have to re-drill the hole where the rod bolts to the brake peddle. I guess it is a ratio deal with giving the manual brakes more power. I also wanted to lower my brake peddle closer to the floor since I was swapping to automatic at the same time and didn't have a clutch peddle to match heights with anymore. I wanted to be able to just swivel my foot over to the brake without lifting my leg.

Just completed a swap to power brakes. At this time I stayed with drum brakes due to budget, but what a difference that made. Well worth it.

I almost did the same thing last week. The booster I bought from the parts store would not "bolt right in".

The old master cyclinder was held on with 2 bolts, the power booster had 4 and the original 2 were no where close to working.

So what's the deal? I didn't even have enough room to drill new holes because it would have been into the colum where the steering linkage comes through the firewall.

The parts store vacuum booster doesn't come with the necessary mounting brackets. Those you'll have to get from a junkyard truck.

fordfication and fordman,

Thank you for the pictures. Can I get this piece from a mid to late 70's truck? mine it lost before I got the booster.

Also, what is the proper size of bore on the MC, 1 or larger? The reman one from my local parts store is 1 1/4".
Thank again,
Paul

yes the brackets are the same from 67-77 1/2. the master bore sounds about right. my childrens manaul doesnt go back far enough to cover our trucks with bore information. the 77 F150 with discs has a 1.00 inch bore. the 77 F250 has a 1.062 bore with disc brakes.

I've got a couple laying around if you can't find one.
