Pertronix Igniter - worth it?

Post by 91Bear »

It is worth upgrading from points to electronic ignition with these Pertronix kits? I've never messed with points and don't really want to tinker with them if the Pertronix is only about $70 and maintenance-free. Are they worth upgrading to?

Points are really extremely easy to work on once you learn how. I have not installed the Petronix on any of my engines just because the points are easy to change and I have never had a problem with them. You just need a feeler gauge and about 5 minutes to adjust them. I have three engines that have points so for me it made more sense to just learn how to work on them. That is part of the appeal of older vehicles, you can actually work on them with basic tools.

I think its worth it. Points are easy to change and adjust, but the flamethrower set up is nice smooth and reliable. I perfer the petronix II set up better because it is tuffer and won't burn out as easy. I would keep the points if you were going with the petronix 1 set up because they burn out easy if you leave your key on to long without the engine running.

Just get a Durospark dizzy from a '75 and an MSD 6A box. Much better than the petronix.

Duraspark would be better but that involves hunting down the dizzy, wiring and box from a junkyard.

Yeah, the DSII is better also because if you burn up the module later on, every parts place that carries points also carries the modules.

But I run an Ignitor II with a Flamethrower coil. Why? Cause that way I get to keep my original appearing distributor setup. Only one new wire. Looks almost bone stock. Has been very reliable for 5 plus years.

But if orignal appearances are not important to you, then go with the DS II.

Why don't you re-read my post. You don't have to hunt anything down in a junk yard. go to your local auto part store.

That is why i suggested the MSD 6A box.

The distributors are the same housing and use the same cap and rotor.

I have no reason to leave the key on because my truck doesn't have a radio.

Duraspark II Quick, easy, reliable. Parts available at the local parts store. Upgrade to a TFI coil & call it done. Have heard some rumblings about the reliability of the PertronixII units.

as always... :2cents:

You can buy the Duro Spark dist. and module at Auto Zone, Advance and most parts houses. You get a rebuilt dist. and every thing is new. Easier to get parts for if you need to .

I'm a novice to all this do it yourself work on trucks. But I like to do it and learn in the process. How much work is it to put one of these units and coil on? Met a guy the other day who said you simlply pull out the old distributor and drop in the new one. Hhmm. Not so simple for a guy like me who has never "pulled out" a distributor. LOL Looks like a fair price for the Ignitor II and the 40k coil.
