squeaky springs

Post by 71HANKER »

Hey guys ive got a 71 f-100 with a 6" lift coil spring front end. The coil springs rub on the upper and lower mounts and i was wondering if anyone knew of a way i could make the annoying creaks go away? The mounts and everything are tight, it just creaks enough to annoy me. Maybe like a plasti dip or teflon spray or something to put between the coil and mount? thanks

i have seen some plastic thin spacer things that go between the mount and coil. it almost looked like a thin piece of platic trash can that some one cut to put in there. that is how thin it was.

Never thought to do it to the bottoms but this is what I did...

...and it held up real good for a couple years easy, then I
replaced that spring with another even heavier spring.
It was pretty heavy to start with, that's no wimp beside it... ;)

Anyway.
It's 3/4" fuel hose, a lot like what's on every fuel pump. :)

WD-40 (Stoddard's solvent and light machine oil) works about
as good as anything to slick it up. I remember it being quite
a good work out and wrestling match. :) That's with the coil
spring clamped in the vise (with aluminum pads over the jaws
so the spring wouldn't get scratched and later break there).

{edit}
Heck, just oil the suckers with STP if you don't want to take
your pickup apart. LOL :) No kidding on that, it'll work and
won't hurt nuthin'.
Greezy (or oily) leaf springs work too even...

ps- what's your "ride height" (as Ford calls it)?

With 4+1/4" ride height...

I am in the process of painting my leaf springs and I spread a couple out and a bottle cap looking thing fell out. It was apparently in the divot in on the leaf. It was plyable, but very dirty so I didn't investigate further. Is this think maybe rubber and used to reduce squeeky breaks? It may be just enough to dampen the metal so it doesn't squeek. Is anybody familiar with these things?
