Are 4x4 F250's supposed to have a pwr steering cooler?

Today I noticed that my power steering pump on my highboy gets pretty hot. Does anyone know if it is supposed to have a factory ps cooler on it? It's a factory style power assist setup. Thanks!

it wouldnt be hard to put one on it. some trucks had a bunch of extra metal line that was on the return line before it went back into the pump aand on some they had a small looped over metal with fins on it.

for my efi swap i put one off from a early 80's on it... it was just a metal line that kinda snaked around the front cross member on my 2 wd

Factory cooler or better should be added.

I've only seen them on 2wd trucks. When that setup was on mine I never had a problem but it was never driven much. The length of the lines alone should be good enough to cool it down. My 77 F150 4X4 uses just the return line as a cooler. My neighbors 76 F250 4X4 doesn't have one either. Not saying you wouldnt benfit from one...just never seen one on a 4X4.

Well the only reason I was concerned is because the pump I installed (an old original from a 76) started making a little noise at idle and it seemed pretty hot. It may just be the old pump, but I didn't know if they had a cooler from the factory. Thanks for the input! I may just replace the pump and see how it does.

The Ford pumps aren't great (read suck). If it's an option for you the saginaw pumps are much better. You can buy conversion pumps to replace the ford ones, but they do not fit truck FE brackets well with the canned ham reservoir. What I like to do is just get a GM saginaw pump from a diesel or big block that has the small remote mount resevoir on it. I cut the center out of the GM bracket and weld it right to the front of the Ford bracket with the resevoir tube pointing to the side. I mount the resevoir wherever I need it and run the GM pulley. This also works great if you have hydroboost brakes since the GM cans already have the H-boost return built in.
