Wheel refurbishing

Post by Merlin68F100 »

I was at a swap met several years ago and I remember a booth set up where a guy was refurbishing wheels. Not re-chroming them but I think his shtick was to strip the wheel and then powder coat it to match your vehicle. Well my chromies have seen better days. I like the style of the wheels but I never have been a big fan of that Elvis dipped in chrome look. Has anybody ever seen this done? I guess I could guy an old oven and one of those Eastwood powder coat kits. BUT if I paid somebody to do it I would not have a powder coat only stove in my way.

My neighbor powder coats. Pretty simple deal. Biggest thing is that the steel is properly prepped. My nieghbor mentioned that it is kinda tuff getting the powder in really tight crevisis. He turns the charge off and then sprays the powder in the tight spots. Once that is done he will turn the charge back on. I had my rims powder coated by someone else. They turned out pretty good.

Buddy of mine had his Dodge ram off road 17" wheels powdercoated. They turned out flippin sweet, but they were $$$$$.

Here is my truck with the factory 17" off road wheels.

& here is one of his wheels he had done. I think they turned out very nice.

I'd say nice. I like the polished outer and dark inner wheel look.

I think that powdercoated wheel looks 10 times better than the factory one.

If you want to try painting them yourself, try Duplicolor wheel paint. I've done two sets of Volvo mag wheels for my wife's car (silver and black) and they turned out nice.

1. Degrease
2. Sandblast and de-blemish if needed
3. Wash
4. Prime
5. I applied 6 color coats and 2 clear sealers.

They make a great product and I heard they merged with VHT for their engine enamel series.

Good luck...
