Fuel pump question

Post by oddball »

I have a 4160 that was spewing gas from the secondary vent tube. I rebuilt it, put new inlet valves and adjusted the floats and it still does it. The floats arent sticking but I didnt check to see if the floats had holes in them. They are the orange plastic Duracon floats and Ive never heard of these having problems. The only other thing I can think of is excessive fuel pressure. It has a fairly new stock style mechanical pump on. Is it possible for the stock pump to do this?

How are you setting the float? I doubt if a stock fuel pump would be too much but you might try a pressure regulator set on about 3-3 1/2 psi

Good info guys thanks. I rebuilt the carb with a Holley kit. It came with new inlet valves which I screwed in dry. Ill check the O-rings to see if they are damaged. The floats arent nitrophyl, they are the orange plastic duracon ones. Im following Holleys dry setting for Duracon floats as far as the float setting goes. As I stated earlier the carb did this before and after the rebuild

Did you check the float levels wet? You should have sight plugs that you can take out on the float bowls for that purpose.

The truck wont start and with the fountain of fuel coming out I dont think it would be a good idea.

I had same problem with my holley, tried several needle-seats all holley brand. Finally found some corrosion and old o-ring in the needle-seat opening in float bowel.Cleaned it and lubicated new needle-seat o-ring and adjusted the fuel level using the sight plug, fixed the problem.
