Frame-off corrosion prevention

Post by MaxKlinger »

Ok guys,

How much do you think it would cost to have a competent body shop strip and paint my truck, inside and out? The goal would be not to create a show truck or high-end restoration, but just to clean and seal everything so that I don't get corrosion problems. I bought an Arizona truck, so I have no rust on my floor pans, cab corners, inner fenders, or bed; I WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY!!!

Ordinarily, I'm very much a do-it-yourself kind of guy. I haven't paid someone to work on a vehicle for me in years. However, I also have the tendency to take on too many projects at one time. In my case, I am completely renovating a 75 year old house that I bought last December and it's taking a lot longer than I anticipated. I don't want my truck to sit and rust while I'm fixing this house! So, I'd just like to know, ballpark, what kind of dollar amount I might have to shell out to have someone else strip my truck down and repaint it. POR-15 the frame and underbody. Paint the body panels inside and out. What do you guys think? Honest opinions wanted.

Thanks!
Tony

ok...you want honest....

if you want the truck stripped, & primered i'm assuming cab, front clip, doors & bed....

4-5k
That figure assumes the truck is disassembled & ready to work. If you want the body shop to tear it down, shop rates per hour prevail.

as far as the frame, if it's a rolling chassis, and you are going to rebuild the suspention, you could p'rolly get away with sandblast the frame, & urethane paint. Personally, i don't much care for POR-15.

To be brutally honest, you could drop 10 grand to get all of this done. Personally, i wouldnt let anyone touch my trucks, much less tear one down & rebulid it

there are ways to do this in stages, as time & money permit, without having someone else working on your stuff. You have to plan ahead & think about it in a logical manor, as to what order it needs to be done. There are stages in the teardown/ rebuild where you will drop some large $$, but not all at once.

Shoot me a pm .....i'm in the middle of a project not to far removed from what you are wanting to do with your truck.

I agree with "fitzwell" pricing. That is probably the minium you might get away with. Paint/material prices have gone out of site, let alone the labor added in...
The last paint and supplies I bought over 10 years ago to paint my Mustang cost me almost $1,000 just to paint the outside of the car, I'm cringing when I have to go get stuff to do my racecar and trucks when I get them ready. I understand why you don't see many nice painted old cars anymore... :2cents:

"fitzwell pricing"....i like that. :D

and yeah, cost of materials is huge on something like that. I'll have right at $500 in sound deadner/Epoxy. And don't forget the little pieces to go along with it. I added up rubber, just under the hood, and i'm gonna have $250 there.

i keep telling myself how nice this one's gonna be, but with no side work coming in, it all comes out of my back pocket
