tool box door lock removal

i have a toolbox door. i have tried removing the lock from the handle. i canyt seem to get the right size socket in there to remove the key cylinder. has anyone been able to remove this without damaging the rubber boot around it? what size socket did you use. 7/8 seems to small. but i think the rubber is also stopping me from getting to it with a socket.
