Steering Box Reseal Tip

Post by BobbyFord »

I just replaced the two sector shaft seals in my Ford box. Most of you know the trick of drilling two small holes opposite each other on the old seal after you get the snap ring and washer out of the way, screwing in a couple of long screws and pulling on the screws with side-cutters.
Just so you know, you can drive the new seals in using an FE harmonic balancer spacer and a compothane hammer. It's the right length and diameter. I used one of the old seals backwards against the new seal as a buffer between the balancer spacer and the new seal.
Also, pack the backside (where the spring is) and of each of the seals with TransJel; it helps keep the springs from poping out during the hammering-in process. Also put a little TransJel on the inside and outside diameter of the seal to help slide the seal in without damaging it.
Resealed without removing the box.
Worked perfect. :D
