Steering Box Spline Count???

Post by Mooosman »

Hi guys,

When I swap the EFI 4.9L into my 72, I am also putting in the ZF 5 speed that's bolted into in.

I figured that while I was working on it anyway, I might as well put in power steering, too! :D So, I'm getting a Saginaw steering box, and I'm going to get a Flaming River tilt column to go with it. Their columns are GM based, so I'm going to need an adapter U-joint to go from the Ford steering box to the GM style column.

Does anyone know the steering shaft diameter and spline count on our Saginaw style boxes? I haven't gotten the new steering box yet, so I can't measure it myself. I looked in the tutorials, but didn't have any luck.

Thanks
Nick

I thought the 2wd box was made by Ford?

I wish I could tell you the spline count, but I don't have one laying around right now.

I was just going by the tutorials section on power steering. It says that the 2 types of boxes were the Bendix, and the Saginaw. I don't know though.

Most of the parts websites list the Saginaw box.

PS: I know the PS pump on my 89 4.9L is the Ford pump. I may be changing that to a Saginaw, too. I've never seen a pump of this style that didn't whine all the time. The one on my friend's Ranger sounds like a supercharger under the hood!

I just happen to have mine off and the count is 36 with a 3/4" diameter. I checked on flaming river sterring compents website and they have that size listed.
