decrease in value when shortening lwb?

Post by 1971ford »

do you guys think that if i were to have my 69 f100's frame shortened, would i lose or gain truck value? i know it probably depends on who's buying, but say you were selling it-would you list it for more?

Ryan,
don't take this wrong, but I would never buy a truck that had the frame shortened. Its not a reflection on you or any one elses abilities, its just that there are so many choices of bumps, at least here in the northwest, why would I take a chance on one with major modifications. I can screw up my own truck very well without anyone elses help.

For what its worth, thats my opinion.

i wouldn't shorten it. i think it would hurt the value. because someone else might not know how good of job was done and then say no i think it might be a bad deal if. it is also a possible insurance liability.

Mine's been cut since the 80's

Not sure anyone would even know unless they were lookin :) and knew where and what to look for

Its a pretty easy job to cut the frame for a welder, I probably wouldnt do it if you didnt have experience though

Not just because of the welding, but it has to be square and exactly right or the truck....wont

I would never buy one that's had its frame cut and welded.

I know that evryone is entitled to their own opinion, and people are free to drive whatever makes them happy. But I could never understand the point of a SWB truck to begin with. A LWB is a lot more useful than a SWB and costs the same to drive. Why create a truck that has a smaller (volume) capacity?

I would only buy a SWB truck if I was going to build it up for drag racing. That makes sense.

Remember, most every dump body, oil delivery truck, and extended roll back, unless bought new, was cut and welded. Never mind every single limo out there.

I wouldnt recommend a guy with his 120V Mig do it in his backyard, but its as safe as new if done right

I figure if I was doing 3-4 oil delivery trucks and a tri-axle tractor a year, I could handle a little half ton :)

BTW, mine would pull every 10 wheeler that ever gelled in Massachusetts home to our garage, mud bogged, tractor pulled, and drag raced with a 125 shot of nitrous.....I'd say it's strong enough LOL

As far as long versus short bed, a long bed is sure handy if you have junk in the back, but if you arent carrying anything why bother?

Even my 2008 SD F250 is a short bed, I like the turning radius and parking better

ON EDIT --- Although I know very well that it can be safe, I too agree that it would reduce value if restored. If a resto / hot rod / lifted 4x4 it really depends on condition and how well it was executed. I did mine for my own use and would never look back, but if I were going for a nice resto, I'd buy a SB truck for investment, not make one

Here are the bed rails in the photo you provided me.

http://www.dennis-carpenter.com/pdf/67-79Truck.pdf

go to page 96 of the catalog. They are not the same as mine, but mine are aftermarket chrome. I wish I could remember where I saw my exact one. Good luck!

go to http://www.dennis-carpenter.com and request a catalog if they will send it. I just noticed that the part is listed for a 73 pick up. You can get it for a 6 or 8 foot bed. Good luck!
