Somethings not right

Post by fomocoguy »

Ok body guys, I have a problem. My truck is a 72, and the hood, grill, drivers fender, and core support (I think) were transplanted from a 69 (I think). My problem is the passenger side fender sticks out from under the hood quite a bit, but the drivers side is lined up perfect. However, if you follow the fender/hood line back they meet nicely at the other end. I thought that mayber the fender was just out of adjustment, but the funny thing is that both fenders line up with the grill and bezels perfectly. However, the center line of the grill does not line up with the center of the hood! Are the older grills or core supports a tad wider than the newer ones? I noticed the lower outer grill mounting screws (near the blinkers) don't have any holes in the fenders either. Is it possible that they used the wrong core support, or that it's not adjusted/centered correctly? Do you think my frame is slightly bent?

Ok, nevermind. I just spent a couple hours taking my front end all apart and realized that the core support was way out of whack, so with some loosening and prying and adjusting and cussing I got it all straightened out (well, as straight as an old beater truck can be!). Thanks anyway!

FYI when you are refering to left and right on a car or truck driver side is left and passenger is right.

It was a pain! I got it pretty good though. It's still not perfect, but it's close, and I can live with it. As you can see from the pics, I got all the darn primer cleaned off the grill too. I wish I knew the person who primered my grill and cut on it so I could shake them...

Here's a few more of the grill, just because I'm so happy with the way it turned out! It was worth the minor chemical burns on my hands!

looks like to me that someone might have had fog lights in the grille cut outs.

I think you're right, since there's some ground wires attached to the blinkers that don't go to anything. I've been trying to come up with something I could put in the spaces. So far all I've thought of were 8 balls or spikes...

those are probably cut outs for a old brush guard. i think it was a factory thing but it might not have been. do a search of the site this was talked about a year ago or so. you might be able to cover the holes with a stock factory reflector. they did have those for the 67 grills. i bet they will work.

Nice work. I spent a couple hours on the hood, fenders, and rad support on my truck last summer. It's amazing how much better you can make your truck look by just moving all the parts around. Since my drivers side cab mount finally caved in, all my alignment work is gone. At least I have some practice for after the mount is replaced.

I hear ya. I spent many hours scrubbing off primer that PO's had sloshed on there. I used rags, scrub pads, and laquer thinner. With enough scrubbing the aftermarket paint will polish right off. As for the missing grill pieces may I suggest finding a trashed donor grill, taking the right pieces and glueing them in there carefully with epoxy. If you got the touch it will be almost invisible.
