Crew cab guys help!

Post by James72 »

I will soon be starting body work on my '72 crew and need to know what you guys are doing about rear doors (I know they are the same as fronts just cut off) and the pillar between the doors. All these panels on my truck are rusted badly I would like to replace the doors with new ones but can't find any, and as for the pillar I was thinking about cutting up a new door skin for that area. I have looked pretty hard for new crew panels but can't find any. Any help would be great. Thanks

i have some extra doors. both sides. i was going to probably junk. i could cut the skins off of them to use as repair pieces. they are decent enough for that.

do you have or have access to oxy-acetyl ?
can you braze uphill with out distorting the metal ?
do you have common body hammers and dollies ?
do you have WAY to much time on your hands and want it right ?

please note that starting with the best piece of metal available for the money will significantly ease the project along and cut the time needed for a good job way down .

Brazing uphill just takes more patience and fine heat control . A tip ...
heat ahead of (above) where you want to deposit rod (exactly backwards of gas welding ). Use bare rod and a can of flux (if you can find it !!) have several rod sizes on hand 3/32 , 1/8 , 5/32" , applying rod to a heated area not only deposits material but removes heat . Lastly , CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN where ever you want to braze .

Setup a practice piece about the same thickness and see how it goes . PM any time

Somewhere on ebay there is a guy that is selling a piece of trim for our bodystyle and their is a crew in the pic that has for sale written in the window. I've e-mailed him twice about buying it and I haven't recieved a response yet. I think your best bet would be to get some regular doors and cut out what is rusted out on the back doors and patch it in.

Let us know how that turns out. My dad cut out spots in the pillars and installed speakers there. I'd eventually like to pull those out, but I didn't know how much a pain in the butt it would be to fill in the holes. Keep in mind I teach writing for a living, so doing it myself is kind of out of the question.

I have holes cut in mine as well but I plan on putting new speakers in towards the end of my project. You should keep your dads handywork and besides more speakers there are the louder you can go.

James72 back in the project update pages I had many posts and pictures of my rear door repairs etc.. cut fronts for inner and outer rear door patch panels, split apart, cut down, welded on. It should still be on there but I'm sure its a few pages back. It sounds exactly like what your describing. They did make nice replacement panels and even had all the correct body lines etc...

I found the page, read the praises, but the pictures are unavailable :( .
I thought of going that route but hoped there was pre-cut panels.
