POR-15

Post by BlueovalFE »

Anyone here used POR 15 before? I was wondering how much I would need to do my frame and third member. Probably some other things I would end up doing.

The guy that welded in my new floor pans painted them with it. Said I would never have to worry about that again.

I never used anything but I read a comparison and Eastwoods rust encapsulator works better and it won't kill you. POR15 has isocyanides (sounds yummy) and Eastwoods doesn't. Theirs is supposed to hold up to uv better too.
Great ideas have always encounter violent opposition from mediocre minds.

I read it, but I don't have the link. I just went online to POR 15 website and checked it out. I still wonder how much to buy, and should I pay for 4 quarts and use it as needed, or buy the gallon and use it all at once.

Don't ever buy this stuff in gallons...it'll go bad before you use it all, since it's not an easy task to seal the can back up. Just get quarts, and open them as you need them.

And you shouldn't need more than a quart to do the frame anyway, but I'd invest in two, just in case you decide to go with multiple coats for added protection.

This is definitely good stuff...as long as the surface prep is done well and according to their instructions. Make absolutely certain that all loose rust, dirt, grease, etc. is off beforehand, and then rough it up a bit. I'd at least spend a few hours with a wire wheel getting as much as possible. You can either use their MarineClean (as I did) or any non-petroleum cleaner to degrease it one more time, then spray everything down with MetalReady, to give the steel an etch. Let it set for a few minutes, then thoroughly rinse it and let it dry. Then you're ready to apply the POR-15.

Oh...and use some rubber gloves and old clothes. You do NOT want to get this on your hands. You'll need a grinder to get it off. ;)

If you're just doing a single coat on the frame only, I'd say a quart would just about do it, but I'd still get two....it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it, especially if you're right in the middle of a job. ;)

One more question, Keith, if you paint this stuff over a bolt or nut, will that make it impossible to get the nut loose later?

Not impossible, just harder. You can always chuck up a wire wheel in the angle grinder and clean the POR-15 off if you need to.
