windsheild rubber stuff

Post by 1971ford »

my truck has wholes in the windsheild rubber stuff and i have never cared until now. when i was doing some work on the truck i noticed that the top passenger corner of it looked bad so i picked at it and this is what happened  :
Image

i reeeeally dont want to have the hassel of replacing the rubber... but it must be done.
here is one of the other holes that have been in the rubber stuff since i got the truck. i usually just put tape over it when it rains.
Image

so... replacing the windsheild rubber is a take-into-shop thing isnt it? since you have to take out the windsheild :? .
oh and one more question. is the outer windsheild rubber connected to the inner? because where there is that whole(picture a few senctences above), there is a exact same sized hole on the inside part of it.
thanks!

Replacing the windshield gasket is fairly simple. I could explain it in detail if you wanted.

Its all one gasket

the holes shouldn't be there. It should be one peice. To reinstall it without the chrome, make sure you get the gasket without the grove for chrome. place the windshield on something (I use 2 sawhorses). Put the gasket on the windshield (Go slow it takes time, and the gasket needs to stretch). Then take a cotton rope about 12 ft long and wrap it arond the gasket in the grove where the pinchweld goes, so that the two ends of the rope end up on the bottom of the windshield. Tape the ends to the inside of the glass. Spray both the gasket and the pinchweld with silicone spray. Place the windshield over the hole where it goes make sure that none of the gasket is overlapping the pinchweld yet. Get inside of the truck, respray the gasket with the silicone spray and slowly pull on the rope. The gaske will start to come over the pinchweld. Pull evenly around the glass, working towards the top middle, keeping the gasket lubricated. as you go you will need to "slap" the outside of the glass lightly to get it to seat properly. Do this 6 inches behind where the rope is. After the rope is out, slap lightly around the edges of the glass. When you do this slap it lightly with your entire hand not just the heel of your hand (very important). Glass should be in, if not start over until it works.

If you have windshield chrome: Sell the chrome and get the gasket without the grove.

The holes are where the rubber cracked and fell out. That is why they look cut

Removing a windshield takes about 5-10 minutes.

Just grab your trusty utility knife and insert it between the glass and gasket about 1/2" (to the depth of the trim groove, which I'm pointing to with the utility knife) and simply run it around the perimeter:

Image

This slices off the gasket lip which holds the glass in place. You'll want to cut the gasket along both sides and across the top, but don't cut along the bottom, as it'll help hold the windshield in place until you're ready to remove it. Here's what you'll see after pulling back the gasket lip that you've just sliced off:

Image

After you've cut along the sides and the top, you simply have to push the top of the windshield out from inside the truck, and then lift it up and out of the bottom part of the gasket. :D
