For the life of me I can't remember what my dad used in the bed of his S-10. It came in a gallon can and he rolled it on. Been there for 5 years.

I would stay away from a drop-in liner. Water can get between the liner and the bed and start to rust it. The liner will move and scratch the paint then that water will set there. :2cents: With the availabilty of all these DIY spray-on and roll-on liners I would go that route. Luckily my truck came with the "30 year dirt and grime" bed liner. Good luck.

:yt: I strongly agree with this. Just ask maxklinger about his 83 f-100. I vote spray-on liner

I just put Herculiner on my truck 2 weeks ago. The base kit includes a gallon. For a longbed, they sell an additional quart, which you will definitely need. I used all but a few ounces.

The kit includes a roller handle, two rough foam rollers, a brush, and one scotch brite pad. The one scotch brite is not remotely adequate. What you need for surface prep depends on what kind of surface you're starting with.

I had already recently done some surface-rust treating and plain spray painting in my bed, so I was starting with a pretty clean surface. Still, I fired up my DA sander and blew through a handful of 180-grit pads. Then used about 4 scotch brite pads in the tighter spots.

The kit recommends acetone or MEK for cleanup, or as a thinner if needed. You can buy a quart of acetone at autozone for under $10. You need it.

You really need to plan on 2 consecutive days to do this. Prep will take probably 3-6 hours depending on the condition of your truck and what kind of equipment you have. It will take 1-2 hours to apply the first coat. Let it dry overnight and apply the second coat.

Fumes were pretty strong. I did it out in my driveway with a fan blowing the first day, and decided to wear my respirator the second day.

EDIT: Oh yeah, spring for a box of disposable rubber gloves. This stuff is nasty. Washing your hands with acetone is probably not something most dermatologists would recommend.

luckily my bed isnt that bad. it has few surface rust spots. and my dad actually just brough home a box of about 30 pairs of gloves from work. the boss told him to throw them away because they were faded so my dad grabbed them.

Hahaha I was going to bring that up, but you beat me to it! I wish I had a picture of the bed on my '83. The floor was almost completely gone, the drop-in liner and and a few sheets of plywood were doing most of the work! kl1lt is absolutely correct. You'd be better off doing nothing than putting a drop in bedliner on.

I'm probably going to get a spray-in for my '72 when I get to that point.

I used that spray paint stuff from advance auto and then I put a drop in bed liner in just because I like them better.
