My cab mount repair

Post by Farmall »

I ordered my cab mount from LMC and it was here in three days. I am disappointed in the gauge of the metal, it is much thinner than the original.

My mount was all gone but did come with a nice critter home.

I was very surprised to find out that once I jacked the cab up, my door went back to closing straight without the drop I thought I was going to have to try and adjust out with the hinge bolts, or replace the hinges.

My son helped with the project and we cut the flanges off the old mount. I didn't know how it was going to fit up so I only took a section off at a time as I wanted to leave as much of the old, good metal, in place as possible.
Image

I also took some of the floor out. The truck sat in the field at my wifes grandad's place for two years with the wing vent open and I think that's what caused the rot.
Image

I trimmed a section off the right side of the mount starting about 2" wide at the back, down to nothing at the top lip.
A dry fit proved to be very nice so I can't complain about the design of it.

I'm going to finish the job today and take more pictures.

I did that last fall. We took the fender off so we'd have more room to work. Used the Dennis Carpenter parts. They were pretty thick stuff.

Fordman,
You might not want to see that........ I'm not a tin man by a long shot. But I'll post pictures anyhow later today.

There are some pics of mine getting done here. The tricky part is the kick plate. There are a lot of layers that come together there.

You start welding little pieces of sheet metal together until it looks done. It a tricky spot. My buddy spent a lot of time on it.

There's a piece at the bottom of te kick plate or the rocker that the floor sits on if I recall correctly. I may have other pictures.....

Here's the rest of the project.
I went to Tractor Supply and bought a piece of 24 x 24 tin and cut it to 24 x 16. I don't know what gauge but it was about as heavy as I can bend without heat.
Image

I welded and riveted it in place. Where I could, I used long (steel) rivets and picked up the new steel, original floor and the new cab mount. It's pretty solid. I'm bummed about ripping my floor though and of course I did it rolling it back into place.
Image
Image

I have a little left to do yet but I had to take it for a ride. The door closes better and I had a really annoying squeak in my steering that I couldn't get rid of. It came to me when I ordered the cab mount, it was probably the column binding as the cab settled, it was, squeak is gone!
Image

A picture that has nothing to do with the body but the motor is shaping up also. It's running pretty good now but I think I need a radiator.

I think so. Of course there's no knowing what's left until you start taking stuff apart.
