Rare find..I think? PIX

Post by tuff4rd »

Well as some of you guys may know im new here and in the processes of restoring/fixing up my new 71 F100. Im replacing the rear bumper due to the chrome being pitted and faded.
This truck came with step bumpers from a 66 Galaxie wagon, which I found out was a popular mod back in the day. I found this out by calling many classic F100 parts dealers in search for replacement of the badly worn pitted ones on the truck.
I was told that this was not a original part to the truck and it was from a Ford wagon but was not sure what model or year they were from.
I really like these bumpers, but I never thought I would find replacments for them. I kept doing a search for "Ford wagon bumpers" on Ebay everyday for a few weeks now and finaly found what looked to be the same bumpers that were on my truck :D Well I just got them today and they are the exact ones that are on the truck. They are brand new NOS, im so happy I found these because I really like the way they look on the bumper.
The only thing I need to figure out is what type of bit im going to need to make holes in the new bumper :?

I have a set of those I bought a couple of years ago. I was going to put them on my crew. Thanks for showing them installed.

Those bumper steps came on station wagons in the late 60's early 70's
It was popular back in "the day" to put them on pickups with sport bumpers

Remember, you are trying to come up with a square hole. Put masking tape over the area you will be drilling to prevent the chrome from chipping or peeling. Drill the four corners first with a small sharp bit then drill the main hole (the bit should be the flat to flat measurement, exactly centered.) Use a file or dremel tool to square the holes up properly, paint the cut edges so you won't have a rust-under situation. Take your time, I'll bet that 40 year old bumper is a thick SOB! When mounting the bumper, cut a piece of innertube to fit between the bumper and the bumper support, it will eliminate rubbing, squeaking and rust in the future.

tuff4rd,

Those are neat! I wonder if they came on the Torino station wagons as well?

Cobalt drill bit will do the job. Go slow and feed it some oil to keep the bit cool, (I use them to drill stainless with good results).
