Cleaning Frame!

Post by Georgia71 »

Hello All,

I recently had a friend of mine come over to give me tips on restoring my 71 custom F100. I'm getting the frame ready for painting soon. He told me to get some oven cleaner and clean the frame with it before anything. He said it works better than anything period! He believes in this stuff so much he buys it by the case. He said that degreaser has nothing on this stuff. He said it would even take paint off. I was wondering if anybody has tried this. I haven't had the time because of working too much lately. I think I will us it under the cab and frame. Also cleaning the transmission just to name a few.

oven cleaner is wicked cleaner, you still may have to agitate with something though, but you better be ready to paint if you remove all your old grease and paint, it'll surface rust (flash) fast.

I heard you have to be careful with this stuff because it's got lye in it. I think I'll pick up some this week.

hmmmm...

When reading this post about oven cleaner having lye in it, made me wonder if it would also work to remove the annodization (?) from the brite trim and grille?
That might be worth doing a little experimenting with...
it would certainly make stripping it easier.

Yep, it works for all of the above...it'll get through that old tough caked on grease like nothing else...we use it on steam engines.... and it will take the anodizing off the brightwork.

Interesting to know. Any particular brand that seems to work better than the other?

I use to use Easy Off oven cleaner to take off old door lettering on used trucks would buy.
You have to be careful, some repaints it would take off the paint, but most original paint jobs there was no problem with.
If you try this test it somewhere like a inside of the door first to make sure that it doesn't take off the paint.

Yeah, I did that on mine as well. Worked just like it did for you. I took a little wire brush and worked in a little before I hosed it off and I didn't have any paint left to contend with afterward either. The fun part was digging out all the old gross oily/tar like crud and debris from the front cross-member.
